    Re: ! Idler Pulley Mod

he is going turbo btw, so his car is not just a lightly modded car.

But I would still like to see before and after results from it. If you can do this and see gains, then that would be great. Why doubt everything without even giving it a chance?

      Re: ! Idler Pulley Mod

Im willing to put money down that there will be no noticeable gains.

maybe its all the engineering ive been studying for the last 4 years, or maybe its just a hunch...

its not that i doubt it, its that logic says otherwise.

^ Your right, but i guess let them go. Next thing is gonna be:

        wipers:
should I get rid of them on a daily driven car?

I'm all for trying something new, but at least make sense out of it. C'mon, an IDLER pulley delete??? The pulley is on a BALL BEARING. There is virtually NO parasitic loss from it!

Well, if you don't like it don't do it. No one is forcing anyone to do this. It's an idea someone came up on their own. If it helps or not eh. So what, at least someone is thinking and not asking a ton of **** headed obvious questions. I figure a lot of mods all of you have used have been developed from trial and error. So what if it somehow leads to something else? Yeah and what if your bearing goes bad? You now have an optional fix besides just replacing the pulley. I'm not trying to be argumentative. Just don't be so narrow minded. We're all trying to make progress and not regress.

            Re: ! Idler Pulley Mod

the cost of buying the fittings to relocate your oil sender is about the price of a new pulley.

yea its an idea, its also a bad idea for a non modified car. if you read my posts, you would see that i said that if you needed the room, its a good idea.

its also not a regress, it sets you back nothing. its just a different way of acomplishing nothing.

believe me, my belt system looks nothing like the GM engineers intended, and there are alot of parts on my engine that were never intended to be on a camaro, let alone a chevy.

            in short.

non to mild modification: don't bother.
need room for something like a turbo: might not be a bad idea.

Just because it's different doesn't make it a good idea.

Here's an example... You could get ride of some rotational mass and friction by putting 4 of those emergency spare tires on the car also. It's different.

The thing is, that there is a reason that serpentine belts have a tensioner pulley. They don't give as much as the old V belts do, it's the way they were designed. Back in the day, you would have to slip the belt on, then put a crowbar against the alt and pull all the slack out of the belt then tighten up the bolts on the alt to keep on the tension. I'm just thinking there are going to be problems down the road, no pun intended, if you start messing with the belt tension. Just thought, if that belt slips off, how long do you think it will take to wrap around those pipe fittings?

And yes 97rs4life, you can see the turbo in the picture. And if you're going this far on modding a car, get rid of the power steering pump and the AC. LOL

Do you guys read half of half the posts or just ignore the parts you agree with so you can just argue? So since when did we call mods stupid that didn't pertain to our individual cars? If it can help you, great.. you have the specs and measurements and advice right here. If it doesn't matter to ya, don't put it down!

Oh btw rt1, I'm not bein a smartass.. but how is belt tension worsened with this mod? I'm not making the connection.

I agree, except have to nitpick, I think steelies are just as heavy as factory aluminums. :P

Blatent honesty. I will always call a mod "stupid" when it does absolutely NOTHING and is a waste of time. Why? Because someone posted on here, which means they want responses. I'm not known for being dishonest. Me putting a cone on my throttle body was stupid (so I changed it). Taking off my front sway bar on a DD car was stupid (so I bolted it back on). Removing a free rotating pulley that weighs less that half a pound is stupid. Why are we sugarcoating everything again? I must have forgot.

If you read the other half of half my post, you notice that I didn't say the tension would be more. My point is that it is less, not enough to keep the belt on the other pulleys or to make other accessories function properly.

Grease... I was talking about those sorry excuses of a spare tire. They're like 3 inches wide. LOL But you're right steelies are heavy.

Every one of you guys is missing a critical factor....belts wear, and when they do they stretch. so even though it may work at 1st. even if you get 1hp out of it in 5k miles the belt will constantly fall off

Kristen, how long have you had the Meziere... have you been satisfied with its performance?

doesn't matter...it will stretch...I understood putting a smaller bet on thats a given. What I'm saying is that ALL belts stretch up to .5in witch is way more than enough to cause it to consistently jump off. If its possible to make deleting the tensioner work. it will be hell keeping it working
