      its a different engine though.

also, you need the pully there, there has to be slack in the belt for starting purposes.

good luck fitting a belt on there without the pulley, and good luck having it snap on startup

Thats tensioner pulley job. I see that you do not even realize what we are talking about here and you are trying to put your 2 cents and getting everybody confused. :spank:

            Re: ! Idler Pulley Mod

Because of the ribbed pullies from the alternator and A/C compressor...the chances of belt slippage is almost impossible compared to the stock set-up.

I'm definately doing this mod soon...I need a new belt anyway.

            Good job...kudos.

First of, I want to make main thing clear – it’s guaranteed that it will free some hp. I don’t want to build case here, because even haters do realize that.

Second. I have never said:” you’ll get 50 to the wheels yo!” It will be very little amount to notice ~1-3hp? vs. perfect(new) pulley. But if your bearing is half way shot - it robes you even more. How to check: Just remove the belt so you can see if you have excessive wear/grooves on the pulley. In addition, move your finger around surface- you can feel burned spots on the pulley.

                That is correct.
I guess every one will agree on the following:
If I will remove Power steering pump – I will get even more hp, same for alternator, water pump and mentioned above AC. Yes. But for what price?
Remove Alternator – loose spark and injectors – engine wouldn’t run
PS pump – power assistance for steering
Water Pump – needed to cool the engine (replacing it with electric will free some hp too, yes its true)
AC- comfort, I want to keep mine.
Idler Pulley - ??? What does it do? No one here said WHY Do you need one? WHY?
Because its easier call Dumb words and make thousands useless posts than actually Think about something.

Idler pulley there IS for a reason and the reason for it is to provide greater contact area for AC pulley. Word “tension” has been used in few replies. There is a point when no matter how tide your belt is, if contact area is too low belt will slip. That’s why engineers have used the Idler pulley,- to prevent AC slippage when in use.

Now let’s compare stock belt route, to the one that I have proposed.
As you see I didn’t just yank the pulley and call it good. Nobody asked: “Why not just remove pulley and use same belt, keep original sensor location?”. Because doing so will decrease AC belt contact area and will increase risk of slippage.
I have done my research and in order to accomplish my goal I had to reroute the belt like on the picture.

Notice highlighted area. For AC its greater than stock, for water pump and alternator it’s much greater than stock, which mean that system wouldn’t slip even with lower tension.
                .....next page
Well thats fan-freakin-tastic but your pulling the tensioner the wrong way...unless you put a HUGE pulley on the assembly it wouldn't work. You'll also notice that the AC DOES NOT gain anything...its simply on a different angle.

I'm just gonna keep posting on this, its fun.

                  This mod does NOTHING.

Gora (and everyone else) there is NO gain to be had here. For the umteenth time, the pulley was on a BEARING that offers LITTLE to NO resistance at all. Which means LITTLE to NO parasitic drag. How the HELL can you think this does something? 6 pages on this?????

You can not say NO resistance at all because its wrong.
If you have 100 backs and some one steel from you a cent you don't make a big deal, that is OK.
This is just another semi free mod that actually works and I bet release more power than famous straight intake elbow mod.
Its 6 pages because because most people do not read the writeup, they see one picture drawing without reading a writeup and quote entire page on hurry to post some ridicules idea about huge pulley.
I didn't expect this thread go over one page. everything here is straight forward. I definitely have spent too much time on delivering this simple mod.
In conclusion I want to say - if you don't like it - don't do it. and if those small gains are not worse your effort - that is perfectly fine.
I did it and Im happy with result. Thats it.

Uhmm, I bid 1 dollar on an electric supercharger today Then other people bid on it up to 60 some dollars. Oh and I may or may not be doing this idler blah blah mod. Not for gains though.. but space. Which will in turn lead to gains.. so eh it could indirectly lead to gains with "supporting mods" hahah!
