  • Very Bad Misfire Please Help

Okay, it all started last week. I was driving down the road and when I would go to accelerate in any gear it felt like the car was running out of gas. You know, not going anywhere, missing or something. I took it to my mechanic who ran a fuel pressure test. 40psi at idle. He said it was too low, although the haynes manual says its okay. Problem disappeared for about 3 days. Car ran just fine. Great acceleration and everything. Then one day I start it up, its missing really bad while idling. SES light comes on. Off the line the acceleration is next to nothing and I must rev it really high to even take off. At crusing speeds around 2k -2800k rpm it is not too bad. Acceleration from that point is impossible. I see lots of sparks running down wires while under the car at night. So I changed my spark plug wires. (Which were only a year old!) And car still runs like ****! Missing really bad at any rpm. Barely moves off the line. Acceleration is non existant. And I can hear sparking noises under the engine! Plugs are also only a year old. I took special care to make sure the wires arent touching anything. Can someone shed some light on this for me? I can barely drive the car its missing so bad.

Also, not sure if this means anything, but when I release the gas cap when putting in gas, a HUGE amount of air pressure comes out. Much more than normally.

if it was me, and since the winter is almost here, i would change out the coils (28 buck a piece) and the plugs. if that doesn't fix your problem then we can take the next steps.

Okay, well the wires are now new again, and plugs are 9 months old with 15k on them. My mechanic hooked up his little scanner thing and its missing in ALL cyclinders. So he says its probably the ignition module or the crankshaft positioning sensor. Sound about right to you guys? It idled fine this morning, then missed really bad while taking off, and acceleration from any rpm. Last night it was missing really bad while idling and accelerating and idled at 2500-3000rpms. I mean, could every single coil have went bad for it to be missing in every cyclinder? The car just falls flat on its face under any acceleration. And I have a loud buzzing sound that comes in goes from the back...fuel pump going out as well I would imagine?

Okay, I just spent 200 on the ignition module...and it still misses really bad. But it tends to be in low rpms when reving. But under load it misses very bad. Still is missing in all cylinders, and took me 10 minutes to start it this morning. I had to press halfway down on the gas pedal to get it to finally start. The coils are fine and have been tested. So it cant be the wires, coils, ignition control module, and the plugs are only a year old. The fuel pressure was 40psi at rail and now its 45. I hear buzzing noises periodically while accelerating from the rear. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem. MAF sensor a possibility?? Also, I let the car idle for 10 minutes, and smoke was pouring from my NEW(2 month old) cat converter and it was glowing bright red. Please help

make sure the cat isnt bad its possible if its ok your either dumping fuel or possibly eating coolant(intake or head gasket)

well the cat is probably bad now considering it was red and pouring out smoke...but i just replaced it 2 months ago. I mean, something is causing it to miss and the fuel contamination made the cat do that. And what is dumping fuel?

when your car is idling, go around to the exhaust pipe and put your hand in front to see how much, if any exhaust is coming out. with the cat being that hot, it has to be clogged which can cause a misfire like that.
