ive been putting this thread off for a while, but my mpg has drastically dropped, im talking like 15-18 mpg tops. ive had the rapid ticking sound for a while now(which i understand to be the lifters?) that happens frequently, but only when at idle. stops as soon as i hit the gas at all. im thinking thats the source of the problem. or it could be when i changed my oil last, i put too much oil in (like 5.5 quarts) and drove it like for a day, then took it all out and put the right amount back in - probably wasnt a good idea.

help! i cant afford to spend this much money on gas.

    Are you getting any smoke?

The first thing I would do is add some injector cleaner and fill er up with premium for atleast a tank or two. Then probably change the plugs. Niether of those would have anything to do with the clicking, but they are cheap and usually will help a little with milage.

Yes, that's bad, but not as bad as mine.

I must be getting something like 11 MPG, plus I have no power at all. I think the engine has never been tuned nor pressure checked. Coming up this weekend.

Luckily this aint my daily drive.

no idea when the last tune up was, but i have sea foamed it lately. plugs are probably getting very old. i still want to know what the ticking noise is though

              Re: terrible gas mileage

i remember it averaging around 19 mpg. it has 75k miles which isnt alot.

rear main seal has gone twice, front main seal once, oil changed+ filter (at least 6 times in past few years) coolant flush, radiator flush, transmission flush, new MAF sensor..recently new spark plugs/wires and it has a newish air filter...recently had to change

i think ive been averaging 14 mpg :/

i dont drive it much though, maybe 200 miles a month.

im going to be replacing fuel filter, blocking off or replacing egr and prly seafoaming, maybe injector cleaner to...cat needs to be replaced and i will put in some o2 sensors also at that time...i can see the money fading away alrdy :( im estimating 700$?

i rly shouldnt even worry about doing any of that because i plan on swapping in an ls7 in 4 years or so (saving 400$ /m) it was the only way i could rationally prevent myself from financing a new car.

Ticking noise might be lifters. My old 68 had same problem, engine didn't run for 30 years.
Does the noise come from the top or bottom of the engine ?

I'd seafoam the car... change the fluids... and change the fuel filter. Then go from there. You might want to try a different type of oil.

full sea foaming was done less than 5k miles ago, so yeah. however, the fuel filter probably does need to be changed, is it hard to do? if so, how much is it to get done at a shop?

do it yourself... its really easy and their are writeups about it either on this site or if you google.

                          clean your throttle body....
check your plugs or change them and change the wires...

thats about all I can think about right now.

How many miles on your o2 sensors? Your mileage will also decrease if they are old and dirty. Probably not a bad idea to replace the plugs and wires, fuel filter, air filter, and check the egr and pcv valve as well.

yeah ive never replaced any of that... but it had a new 3800 with 55k miles put in it about 15k miles ago.
