• codes....codes....always codes!!!

Hey Folks! I did a search on this topic and the info I found was not exactly what I needed. My 96 bird is throwing two codes...a P0441 and a P1406. The Guy at auto zone said that the P1406 is a dealer code(?) and the 0441 is some kind o emission control thing. Some of the results of my search were 2 years old and I figured somebody had to have found out some new stuff in two years.
So does anyone know how I can remedy these two codes? Blessings and Happy 4th.

The 1406 is the EGR going out, which in turn could be possibly be caused by your CAT going out (increase in back pressure).
P0441 Evaporative Control System - Improper Purge.

Hope this info helps

I have gotten that P0441 code too a few years ago.
Check the plastic hose running from the top of the intake manifold passenger side -front, to the rear of the alternator. It goes to an EVAP Purge Valve, and if the hose has a slight crack in it, it'll throw a code. It was the solution to my P0441 code.
I replaced the plastic hose with a standard vacuum (rubber) hose.

That's seriously cool, Shirl...I am going to download it onto some card stock and put it up in my garage for future reference. How much are those little yellow computer modules they use at autozone and where can you get them? anybody know?

I actually use an Actron scanner. Very simple to use. Just plug it under the dash while the car's running when the SES light comes on. Mine is a little outdated but it reads the code and shows it. (then you have to figure out what it means. I usually look in the GM repair manual). The scanner also clears the code. They make a better version of it now, that actually lists the code and it's meaning. I paid about $150 for mine. It's probably more money now because it's more accurate. I've thought about getting a newer one. It's been worth it. I've carried it in the car with me for about 6 years already. Just make sure it's the one for OBD2. Hope this helps.

Oh BTW, I just bought an EGR today because mine went too (code1406).. it was suppose to be $200 at the dealership but I paid $152 (discount)... then I went to GM PartsDirect.com and it was like $100 Moral of the story....BY YOUR PARTS FROM GM PARTS DIRECT!!!
