if i have an oil leak and water slowly gets in somehow and if i drive the car on a regular basis and change the oil regularly, how bad could it get? i mean winter is coming, and i always find crud in the oil cap, showing signs of water. am i screwed? i cant affor to fix it. rear main seal is leaking i think, dont know for sure but oil leaks all over the y pipe.
can anyone give me a ball park range they had to fix a leak like this?

rear main is about $350 to have done, but a leaking rear main wouldn't get water in your oil. if you have the time and know how, you can do the head gaskets yourself, but it is pretty involved. But it sounds like that's the problem to me too.
a lower intake leak would be a job to take off the intake throttle body and valve covers to fix? it would be under the heads then right?

I had the whole dissappearing coolant and the 'mayonaise' in the oil fill neck / oil cap. Ended up being the lower intake gaskets for me, since then no more issues :)
If it is an upper intake leak you would need to get down to this point:
But at that point you might as well change the lower intake gaskets, which is just that one more part coming off. I just did this a couple weeks ago, took about a day, I took two though working only a few hours each time. Very do-able. You can do it, just take some time, set aside two days just in case, and read up a little on it. All together my bill from Autozone was under $100 in parts (upper and lower gasket, some rtv, paint)
one tips if you do this yourself. get little zip lock bags and label each bag of nuts, bolts, screw or what ever. what is it, and where it came from. alot of saved time later. works wonders for me!
tip I have... just go buy new lower intake bolts... one snapped on me, (towards the rear of course) leading me to have to pull the head. they are not easy to find off the shelf anywhere.
and a few of my other ones I did not trust replacing...
Also if you do do a headgasket, our headbolts need to be replaced. Most autopoarts places carry them.
So if Oil is leaking all over the y-pipe, that a head gasket leak?
i have been looking under the car everytime when i change to oil, do other things ect... but i cant pin point the leak cuz there is so much shiz in the way. i turn on the car and it slowly drips around the oil pan and stuff. but it doesnt seem to be coming out of the oil pan.

I would say rear main... when you drive the car its blowing onto the exhaust and when its running at idle, its just leaking down the side of the oil pan.

Thanks for the tips guys. now trying to figure out my game plan.
