  • hmm... mods?

ok... some background; i am looking to get a little extra umph outta my camaro and i don't have much to do it with, but what i do will probably go into it because cars make me happy :) .
I have a 96 teal 3.8 v6 camaro with 130k (first car). I don't believe its a Y87 but it has rear disk brakes and i believe that to be the only mod...
    heres the car:

now... im making this thread to kind of keep track of what i want to do/could do/and might do sometime later (hoping to keep this car at least through college)
ok...now im looking for mods that wouldn't run to much more than a hundred bucks... unless it really adds some HP (not sure how much headers add, but that might be possible)

performance - im looking into air intakes
1)custom (~$15 for piping ~$50 for filter [if you know where to get a filter cheaper please tell])
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=3
2)pre-built kit off ebay or something (~$50-200)
    something like this? http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=3

im also thinking about exhaust. Im thinking just the muffler like a flowmaster. ~$50-100
    http://www.flowpowerexhaust.com/perf...5&brandid=4432
    #42583
but i might consider getting a whole cat back system...

a high flow cat might be nice too
    (~$80-200)
    http://www.flowpowerexhaust.com/perf...5&brandid=4433

i might consider getting headers, but if i did they would probably be used... how much HP do they actually add? something like this
    (~290-400)http://www.flowpowerexhaust.com/perf...4&brandid=4464

i really can't think of any other cheaper performance mods... i want some... just not to much cash to throw at it right now...

for appearance things i could afford might be some things like
    clear corners (~40-60)
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=1

    rear inserts (~10-20)
    from that ben franker guy

tail and head light black covers (~70) ea.
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=1
    head lights
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=1
    tail lights

    windshield banner (~30)
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=1

    power attenna (~100)
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=5

i was also kinda thinking about a spoiler (particularly the rs)
    (~200-250+ paint)
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=4

    billet grill (~150)
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=1

    carbon fiber interior trim (~200)
    http://rksport.com/main/part_detail....mdid=1&catid=4

i was also thinking about getting some silver grand sport stripes or racing stripes (~30-150)
gs stripes from ben franker and the racing stripes from some other web site that i found were a couple hundred less than others lol... i can't find it now, ill post it later

    solar wing
    (~100)
forgot where... to lazy to look now

    EDIT::
oh and i might try and take the door panel trim stuff off too...
oh... and cut mabey a cut out before the muffler... i don't think it hinders performance and heard it sounds better... but most important, its free

thats all i can think of at the moment, and no, i can't afford all of these... i was just looking at some options and came across these that caught my eye... i would like to get some power first and then get into appearance  but... its a lil more spendy... also sorry for the long post, i think ill just kinda use this thread as an idea of how to get started...

so... sorry for the long post... what do you guys think? what should i go with? i would like to go used to save on cost... so ill try and keep a look out... thanks guys

    Re: hmm... mods?

Look at your door sticker and look for "Y87" the rear discs as well as dual outlet exhaust are Y87 features, does it have LSD? (if you hold the brakes and give it gas do BOTH tires spin)

    Mods I would do:
Exhaust - check out camaroz28.com classifieds for some cheap cat-backs, LT1 cat-backs will work on your car as well. I also am selling a flowmaster 80 if your interested

Intake - "Chrome Intakes" on ebay like $75, make sure you get one w/ a K&N filter and one that has the most tubing (not just a partial kit)

Headers - texas-speed.com has them for like 230 shipped, or there are some used ones in the classifieds ever so often

Dont do a billet grill IMO tacky

Rear fillins would look nice, tail-light, headlight, turn signal blackouts are nice looking

      Re: hmm... mods?

Save yourself some money on the tail light blackouts and get some niteshades. To stick with the theme, you can use it on your front corners as well, and the rear sidemarkers too. Quite a bit to be saved there. I wouldn't put an RS spoiler on it. Wouldn't do a billet in this case either. As a cheap option for headers, you can get a set of tubular manifolds from an 00+ car and port them out yourself with a dremel. I went this route and it was a noticeable power increase over the log style. Check your RPO codes for GU6 and G80, or do the burnout test.

I noticed also, in the first pic, you have dual exhaust. Another sign of Y87. Check your door or glove box. I think you might have Y87. You'll have a nice headstart.

          Re: hmm... mods?

billet grille on teal would be kinda odd lookin, but maybe it would be a cool odd?? lol but yea, if u have a Y87, ur on ur way. ive never seen blackouts on a teal, not sure how that would look, but i know some nice tips would accent the rear, along with the camaro inserts...

btw, what exactly is nightshade, and where can i get it?? i wanna black out my black 95, but i dont feel like spendin all my gas money lol

            Re: hmm... mods?

appearance wise i think some cheap but effective ideas would be:

            shaved moulding - free

            clear corners - like 30 $?

some decals from b franker - depends how many u buy =) i've seen some good ones on his site for camaros.

performance wise you could fab your own intake or buy a cheap one on ebay.

I found a flowmaster 80 catback system for only 260$.... it was well worth the money. U can also pick up a catco high flow cat for around 50 bux.

i would say pullies, but only the 3.4 has them.

what kind of d.s. do u have? prlly the one piece steel? if u could find one for cheap i'd buy a one piece aluminum d.s. install is easy, especialy if u don't have the two piece d.s. ......

              Re: hmm... mods?

thanks guys for the replys... ill have to do a search on nightshades... they are just black tint right? where could you buy it? and i just went out and looked at my door sticker, and its so faded (age i guess) that i can't see what it says really... but im fairly confident that its a Y87 then... i don't think the previous owner did anything to it... oh and these headers are 200...

ballpark... how much HP would they add?
