in the owner's manual of mine, it says that it won't detect any radar if it's being blocked by anything. it goes on to list things like plastic, vinyl, cloth, etc. basically anything but glass. i don't think it would pick up much of anything.

if you have a friend in the police dept. then ask them to bring home a radar gun and do some testing with it.

yeah, i have some friends. i'll test it out caus there is a spot in my town that goes by a old people home and it always goes off. i think its the door sensors or something. im just going to stick it in there and run the power cable from under the passanger side below the glove box and up to the lighter

I'm pretty sure the detector will need a line of sight or atleast not a physical obstruction around it to work correctly

You'll have to dismantle the radar detector. Mount the display of it in the dash and move the antenna to a spot where it can have line of sight out the windshield (ie move it into the venting at the top of the dash). It MAY work otherwise but won't work near as often with near as far a range.

Why not get creative and put the antenna in front of the rear view mirror? I have often thought this but never had the detector to do it.

You'd loose the ability to detect radar coming from the other side of the mirror. Thats why you put the detector on the dash and the antenna for it sticks out of the top of the radar detector. You'd be better off puting it in the vents in on top of the dash like some people put the light for their car alarms.

I have mine hardwired above my rear view mirror. The detector starts when my car starts and turns off when it turns off. It so nice and you can barely see it from the outside. There is a pic on my site of my old detector and it positioned above the the mirror.
