I just wanted to share that i did the vats bypass thing yesterday. My brothers car up and quit two days ago. It wouldn't start, but all the electros were on. I tested the key, 7500 ohms. I tested the wire coming from the lock cylinder, nothing. I bought a 10k potentiometer ($3.00) because I didnt want to mess with adding more than one resistor.
Things I would suggest when doing this:
1. If youre ohms are low, dont get a potentiometer. The knob is very sensitive and its hard to keep it at the ohms you want. Stick with just a plain old resistor.
2. If you get a potentiometer, you better have a voltimeter. Ive heard people say wire it up and keep adjusting it while a friend tries to start it, not going to happen.
3. Set the ohms first (attach two wires to it, add the voltimeter, then turn the knob), then secure the knob in place so it doesnt adjust itself.
It was pretty easy, and I would suggest doing it if you have problems with youre vat. We just replaced the lock cylinder a couple months ago and now its out agian. Its a really cheap fix ($3.00).
