Kristen check your oil pressure sending unit.. When i bought my firebird I had a nice pin hole in it and it was causing it to leak slowly and black smoke coming outta the exhaust pipes.. Finally it just started pooring out of the car while i was driving and Oil was everywhere all the way down the exhaust pipes from the block back and all undernearth the car. Was a messy clean up but an easy part to fix. Your not gonna be able to tell if its leaking by pulling it out and checking it but you'll see it dripping out of there a little while the car is running check that out. Its worth a shot

It's that thing sticking out next to the oil filter.

If your looking down at your engine in the front of the car it should be on the driver side down by the oil filter it is like 3 inches long and shaped like a cylinder type thing.. I had to jack my car up though to get it out it just kinda sticks out and there a plug that plugs into it. Hey its worth a shot to check it and if it is it 20$ repair..

By the time you have the tranny far enough out to replace the seal it's all the way out anyway.

Wow, I can't believe I was the first to call it.

Like others say, just partially remove the tranny to replace the seal.

              Hope I didn't jinx you.

                Kristen,
I haven't kept up too closely with your car but I read on your car domain page that you are looking to install a Spec Stage 3 clutch. If in fact you do have the clutch in your hands now would be a good time to do it if you do end up replacing the rear main. Do that and have the flywheel resurfaced for the new clutch. While you have the tranny out you may as well do as much as you can.

The Flippin rear main seal has my vote. Mine was replaced three times under warrantee along with the pan gasket cuz ive been told you cant do the rear main without doing the pan. and guess what IT STILL LEAKS although not as bad,but it drips on the Y pipe and burns. Idont get any smoke but you can smell it once in awhile. PS now its outt of wsarranty how conveinient for the dealer!!!

                    dye and lights???

If you do the rear main seal do the rear cover gasket!!! All the times mine was replaced, the frickin covergasket was the culpret and it was fouling the rear main seal!! While youre in there do the covergasket, you wont regret it.. I promise!!!
