ok I have a question that I kind of feel dumb asking but I am going to ask anyway. Why did the Camaros and Firebirds adopt the 'F-body' name in the 70's? What does F-body stand for/mean?

yea, I think that maybe I should have made the subject "What does F-body stand for?" instead of just "Why F-body?"1996 Polo Green Metallic Camaro:<br />SLP CAI, Carsound/Magnaflow 3\" in/out cat, Flowmaster 2.5\" cat-back... sounds great

I always wanted to know the answer to that question. Some one asked me if the ford truck was considered an F-body? Ford F-150? New Toy Red 94 Formula LT1

I don't know the answer and thats why I asked it, but I feel confident saying that the F-150 is not an F-body. I think the 'F-body' name only applies to our cars.1996 Polo Green Metallic Camaro:<br />SLP CAI, Carsound/Magnaflow 3\" in/out cat, Flowmaster 2.5\" cat-back... sounds great

"F" is GM's platform code for the Camaro and Firebird automobile.
You will find the letter "F" in the VIN of every F-Body (possibly exluding the 1st gen). The letter "F" can be found at the 4th digit of the VIN on 4th gens.Jason McCallister, Founder & Webmaster<br /><a href=\"http://www.wtfba.org\" target=\"_blank\">West Tennessee F-Body Association, Inc.</a><br /><br />2000 Camaro - <a href=\"http://www.wtfba.org/site/view_member.php?ID=68\" target=\"_blank\">Details</a>

I know the "F-body" name was not used until the 70's, but does F stand for anything? or is it just the code? There must be a reason why we are F and vettes are Y and and some other bigger cars are G.1996 Polo Green Metallic Camaro:<br />SLP CAI, Carsound/Magnaflow 3\" in/out cat, Flowmaster 2.5\" cat-back... sounds great

It doesn't really stand for anything. Just a code to denote the family of vehicles. Just like Z28. That was originally just an option code, but it was eventually used as the actual name.Matt

Well, they couldn't call it the "C-Body" (using the C to stand for Camaro) because the Corvette already had it. So, my best guess is that they decided to use the F from Firebird to denote our cars...Tom<br />Too many mods for this sig.<br /><a href=\"http://www.l337server.com/Tom/cars.html\" target=\"_blank\">My car\'s site</a><br /><br /><a href=\"http://www.FullThrottleV6.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.FullThrottleV6.com</a>

Yes, the letter is nothing more than a code to identify a chassis family or body type.
All camaros and firebirds are F, vettes are Y, cavaliers and sunbird/fire are J, FWD midsize (Lumina, monte, GP, Regal) are W....the list goes on and on. They don't really mean anything, nothing but a code.
