I have been having this ongoing battle with my left hand outside mirror. It seems a small bracket inside that attaches it to the car has broken inside. It is either made of plastic or aluminum and I have tried to JB weld it together and it has worked to some degree of success, but I am tire of hassling with it.The mirror housing and motor assembly is in excellent condition. Its just this little do-dad that is causing all of the trouble. I don't need a whole new mirror. Does anyone here have a line on a place where you can get stuff like these brackets and parts that just give out on our cars?
Yep, the junk yard, aka automotive parts replacment facility. Call around first to see if there are any models on site. It is also a good way to practice removing difficult parts before you mess your car up.
Thanks guys!
Checked the local yards here in the area....next into the scary big city (New Orleans) to check them out. No such animal here in the burbs. automotive parts replacment facility ....
I like that! Blessings!
if the bracket is aluminum you can probably make it a permanent repair by brazing the aluminum. bernzomatic makes aluminum repair rods (its a zinc alloy mostly) that can join aluminum.
If I can't find the bracket, chas, that's what I may have to do. I tried yet another JB weld repair yesterday afternoon....waited the reccomended 15 hours plus two...and it wasn't on the car good before the repair failed. Back to the drawing board...or the gluepot as it were. I
feel that its looking more and more like I need to just find a bracket off a wreck and use it. Does anyone know if the camaro mirror is the same animal as the firebird mirror.
That would double my chances of finding the part if they are. Blessings!
I think they are the same. If there is any metal in the bracket assembly, it would be pot metal, basicly so cheap that you can't weld it or braze it. I will check our area and see what I can find. If I can get ahold of one, I will send it to you, since your family
FOUND ONE!!!... A guy on ebay had the whole rig up for 15.00 and I shot a bid in and snagged it. I tried a new "glue" (do any of these things work??? ?) yesterday and I will try to reinstall it around midday. This one cures in 24 hours so I'm giving it one more try. The new one should be in in a couple of days. Man, has anyone priced "used" sideview mirrors from junkyards...I mean were talkin' 65-90 bucks for an electric motor model and that's with no guarantees of anykind. Blessings and thanks saved1 for thinking of us. Keep fighting the good fight!
So much for "Heavy Duty Welder".... its just more "light weight trash". I would have been better off with super glue.
Blessings!
You are not alone is being frustrated in products that claim to bond anything. They never do what they claim to do. What a big scam. Glad that you found what you needed. Praise the Lord for giving you favor in your bid! The joy of knowing the Lord, and the blessing that it brings. Psalm 89-1
Yeah, I've had plastic parts disintergrate under some of the heavier duty stuff,
I did, however, find an epoxy just laying around in the garage that I slapped on the piece at the last minute and when I came back home from my Mercury Villager alternator nightmare last night, found the part on the workbench dried hard as a rock. I reinstalled the mirror...and its still not right because the old mount is kinda lopped with all of the glueing and manipulating but for now....its on the car, praise God. I'll get the name of this stuff so we can all go buy a case of it before it too like all other really good products...gets lost in the quagmire of crummy junk like "heavy duty welder". Blessings
The name of the stuff I used is by a company called "Devcon". The product name is "Plastic Welder" (go figure)...and this stuff flat got it.
I am pretty sure I scored this stuff at Wal-Mart but if you can't find it the web address is www.devcon.com.
It comes in a two part epoxy-hypodermic-style-two shot-cylinder thingy that you squirt onto a disposable surface and mix, then apply. I've had it a while and think its what I used the first time this happened about 8 months ago.
I'm still changing out the mount when the new one arrives...but its good to discover a product that does what it claims on the package.
Still trying to find oil leak on my Camaro, it’s a tough one. I think it is the oil pressure sender myself. Leaking when raving and going into boost....
