  • ignition help needed please!!

heres the story hopefully you guys can shed some light on my problem.

a couple of days ago my car was shaking real bad if i hit the gas anymore that just a hair and i would have no acceleration so i took it to autozone and they read the codes and the one that came up was cylinder #2 missfire. so in the last two days my buddy and i changed all the plugs and wires. to try to make a long story short the car is doing the same thing after the tune up so i went back to auto zone to get the codes read again and now its comming up as multiple cylinder misfire i know that one of the coil packs work cause my buddy took off one of the plug boots off the coil pack while the car was running and got a nice little shock. my assumption is that the ignition module is bad, does sound about right for the diagnosis and generally how many miles on my 3.8 motor do those last for? i am currently at 130k

    thanks,
    tristan

^ what they said. as well as what you said.

it could very well be your ICM. hopefully not cuz they are kind of expensive. best of luck to you figuring it out though.

thanks guys, i switched out my coil packs and ignition module from one that i got at a junk yard for 30$ the only bad thing it was for a different 3.8 motor it all plugs in fine and everything just the mounting is different so i have it all zip tied up for the time being. bird how much do you want for the ignition module?

              Re: ignition help needed please!!

Take the two 5mm screws out of each coil and the module should lift off the mounting bracket, you should then be able to use the bracket that goes to your car.

That $130 module from AdvancedAuto is junk (GPsorensen). I already returned it three times over the past two years. Spend the extra $60 and buy the ACDelco part.
I have not had any luck with their $20 coils either but they replace them without problems (lifetime warranty)... just make copies of the receipts because after 6months or so they start fading and you can't read it anymore...

Yeah, reckon all receipts are like that nowdays... on purpose I bet!

BTW, if your friend got a "little" shock out of that coil pack it was a bad one. They will knock the fk out of you!!!

that doesnt sound like the coil packs, if it were, you would have two cylinders misfiring, not just one

                      Re: ignition help needed please!!

i had msd wires running to my accel coils and after 2 yrs started going through coils like crazy.

after 3 autozone coils in 2 months i replaced the module with a used one, replaced all 3 packs w/ accel again, and ran the accell hi temp 9000 wires rated at 150ohms per ft. & no problems since

the msd wires are rated at 50 ohms per foot. i thinkthe coils were peaking too easily causing the coils to burn up prematurely
