There is a ticking under the hood of the car and I was told that I need a new tensioner. I have no idea what that is so I was checkin on it with you guys. Also when I hear the sound I just turn off the car and get some good ol oil and put it on the pullys the belt runs on and it sounds fine but that only lasts for a day or so.

The bearing is a sealed bearing so you will not be able to repack it. You could either buy a new tensioner alltogether or just the pulley. I have switched the bearing by itself before, but it's kind of a pain. For the trouble, you would probably have better luck just changing the pulley.- Josh
If you have any questions or need installation pics/help, e-mail me: Viper98885@aol.com
\'93 Camaro Hardtop
\'01 Lincoln LS8 Sport
\'00 Yamaha YZF-R6
Full Throttle Performance

this is actually a common problem on v6 F-Bodys that I've come across. Your tensioner is the pully directly below where the heater hoses plug in. What generally happens is the tensioner gets out of line with the rest of the pulleys. Mine was making a similar sound and it kept getting pulled out further. If I tried to put something on it to stop the sound it would slick the belt off all the pullies. If that's your prob you'll probably need to replace the whole tension assembly (which includes the part where the heater hoses plug in, it's a pain in the ***).\'01 Trans Am WS6 5.7L M6
Stock now w/ K&N and whisper lid
Coming soon: B&B Triflow catback, MAF, 85mm throttlebody, headers, supercharger?

The bearings in mine gave out a few months ago and the pully wheel literally flew off while I was driving. I heard a loud clank in my engine compartment, that was it hitting the side. They sell just the pully at Autozone for like $9 but I stripped the threads taking it off, it's really soft metal. I probably could have used loc-tight on it but wanted to play it safe and bought a new assembly from the dealer. Keep in mind that he has a 1994 3.4L V6 and not the 3.8. I will pull up the diagram on it and post it.
3.4L V6 Tensioner & Idler Pulley
For the 3.4L guys, the idler pulley is also included in this diagram if you decide to delete your AC.

okay, my camaro (3.4)had the same problem. Actually it got so bad that when it was wet outside, it would sound like a bad belt!!! I kept spraying the tensioner down with WD40 till I decided enough was enough (actually, I hate working on a car in the cold). The tensioner instalation is easy. I got mine from Parts America for like $30 and I decided to replace the belt since it was a year old anyway. If you do not know where your tensioner is, you will know when you buy the new part!! On our car, the tensioner kinda sits between the alternator pulley and the harmonitic balancer pulley. I know i misspelled it! I believe there is a picture of it on the radiator shroud showing the belt installaion. Just remove the belt. Then the, i believe, three bolts holding the tensioner on. From here its just do everything in reverse. Total installation is like 30 minutes. If you have a fax number I could fax you the instructions from my haynes manual (My desk top has taken a crap and I'm currently using a laptop). Trust me, its easy....
