  • The colder it gets the less my car wants to start

First off this is an '02 Camaro 3.8 Auto with GT1 cam, full dyno tune, intake, exhaust, etc... let me know if you need to know more.

So i live in the chicago area and as you know it pretty bad up here in the winter time. My problem is that it seems the car has a harder time starting the colder it gets. It will run rough like it's missing for the first six or seven seconds and then it smooths out to its normal self. Well this morning i went out to start my car and it turned over started/ran for like a second or two and then died. all my attempts to start the car after this did nothing. It would try to start but never really turn over, at least to say it didn't get as far as the original first time i tryd starting it. I have yet to check fuel and spark because i can't feel my hands right now.
The one thing that i was thinking is a friend of mine that owns a shop said that if i had a bad plug or plugs that it would make the car act like this. I am gonna change the plugs as soon as Autozone opens at 8:00. Any ideas would be great, currently i am very late for work.

    Thanks again,
    Jeff

who did the cam? something could be wrong in there?

those of us with cammed cars, know that when it cold the car can be a little violent for the first few mins

I got all the plugs out and they were soaked with fuel, so i am letting it all evaporate. in the meantime i got a ride to auto zone and got some new plugs. The old ones looked pretty bad, they deffinittly needed to be changed. I chacked spark and it all looks good so i think the reason it has a hard time starting when it is cold is because it dumps to much fuel. I remember that when i got it tuned that we decided to go slightly rich to get rid of any KR and because of the spark advance as well. So basicly at this point i am letting it air out and i will put the new plugs in in a bit and see what happens. Wish me luck!

i think you need to find a way to not have it dump so much fuel at idle/start up... maybe tune?

At this rate i may end up having to have the tune adjusted, but i guess i will just have to wait and see. I'll have to give my guy a call and find out if he can do that for me. It's so cold out side that i hvae been inside warming up for the last 45 min and my feet and knees are still freezing, this sucks.

              yeah dude winter totally blows.

but i think it should be manageable to tune for less gas at start up and idle, btw what size injectors do u have?

Stock injectors, i called my tuning guy and he said to hold it to the floor when starting it to keep it from flooding, and then to give it gas accordingly.
Tried that after putting in the new plugs and it started. It still ran rough for the first 10 seconds but then smoothed out. Gonna possibly look into replacing the coil packs. Was also thinkin possible weak coil pack, thoughts?

oh ya he also said that the cam was not helping the situation, not that i care because i love the thing but i guess i will just have to deal with it.

Just a quick question.. have you gotten larger gauge ground wires installed? I hear a lot of people complain about the hard cold starts and I was one before.. I haven't installed a cam yet but it was getting rough. I took a shot in the dark and decided to do the "big 3" wires and I haven't had a rough start since. Wouldn't hurt anything if you haven't done it yet, and its cheap as hell.
