  • Oil pressure gage jumping around at idle

Noticed this first a few days ago: When at idle, the oil pressure gage sometimes jumps around like a decibel meter. Usually it reads about 45(maybe?) psi at idle and 75(?) under load. When it's jumping around it stays within those parameters, and the RPM isn't fluctuating. I'm running the same weight oil I've always run, and haven't seen any other irregularities with other gages. No SES or Check Gages lights either. Anyone seen this before?

mine does it too, kinda weird. usually between 40-60.

it scared me the other day though when it dropped to 0 for about a minute at idle and my check gauges light came on. but as soon as i drove again it was fine and n problems since.

ps, that could have been since i was a little over a quart low of oil. all fixed now.

Apparently this is "Normal" Do a quick search. I guess anywhere from 60 at wile driving down to as low as 25 while idle is the norm.

mine does the same thing. the amount of jumpiness varies with the temperature of the engine and the ambient environment (outside temperature). the hotter the day the more it jumps around at idle. thinking about using 10w-30 during the summer instead of 5w-30 all year round.

I'm just wondering if the actual oil pressure is fluctuating, or if the gage/sensor is malfunctioning. Sounds like this is quite normal however, and I guess as long as it stays within normal psi ranges it's nothing to be concerned about.

Just checked Alldata's service bulletins and there's nothing listed for this problem.

I think it may be something to do with either a sensor or maybe you're not getting proper voltage to the gauges?

Oh, check the oil pressure switch, gauge, your oil pickup screen, oil pickup tube. Other than that, it looks like maybe you are suffering from actual fluctuations in your oil pressure, maybe that would be from worn bearings?

Thanks for the suggestions, it's still under warranty so maybe I'll take it by a dealership (like they'll really bother to look into it  ). I should hope it's not the bearings after only 17,500 miles.
