  • pics of my oil in coolant

    Hi,
There is a pic of the oil i found on the radiator and white sludge on oil tube. Do you think it's due to an intake gasket problem or just the residue of old dex-cool and condensation.

    I have a second question.
My car had 110000km and i don't know if my rear diff have been flush by the previous owners. So what is the method to do it and what kind of fluid to use, gasket to buy...

    It's a 98 camaro 3.8L.

    Many thanks for your help.

the breakdown in the oil tube is a sign of a failed gasket somewhere; either intake or head gasket

        Ok.

The white sludge only appear when the car is frozen but if i don't remove it, it stay.

I lose a very small amount of coolant but on the bottle, not in rad. On the pic i have taken the level in rad is without add any coolant.

I want to replace the intake gasket but it's my daily car.

        Many thanks for your help

Your oil is breaking down. Ignoring the problem could cause exponentially costly damage, in terms of time and money.

When I checked my dipstick, and drained my oil you really couldn't tell very easily there was water in there.

Replacing the upper and lower intake gaskets is not very hard. Mine is my DD as well and I did it over the course of one afternoon and the following morning, the only reason it took that long was I had things to do and only worked maybe 2 hours that first day.

Just set aside a weekend, or start early in the morning. Keep everything labeled and baged and have all you need on hand. Get your lower intake gasket, get the UIM gasket, picket up two plastic coolant elbows just to have them. Keep some RTV on hand and some anti-sieze.

                Hi guys,

I'm joining the subject and I have a stupid question
What is it you guys call the lower intake gasket ?

In my mind there is only one intake gasket. It's the gasket which is just underneath the red part on your car Taheen.
                Am I right ?
This one should be changed too.

The one under the red part on my car is the upper intake gasket, I think autozone lists it Intake Plenum Gasket, below that is the silver piece you see in this next part, that is the lower intake manifold, under this is another gasket set that seals the lower intake manifold to the engine block and on each side to the heads.

To give an idea... here is the Upper intake gasket (Plenum Gasket):

And here is the lower intake gasket (Intake manifold gasket):

And for ****s and giggles to drive it home that it is probably these gaskets... here is a before picture of my oil fill tube.. she hasn't done this since fixing those two gasket sets:

                    Taheen !!!
                    Now I understand.

How long do you say it takes to change both gaskets ?

I'm a rookie but would like to do it by myself. Already done my water pump which was dead. Took me all afternoon because of old gasket left glued on the engine

                    Thanks, good job

Re: pics of my oil in coolant

Taking it all apart and getting to know the engine will take longer than just putting it all back together... given you set up a nice label and bag system.

I would say start early in the morning, give yourself all day for those -just in case- situations. But as long as you have all the gaskets on hand, along with those two plastic coolant elbows, I would say a nice good 5 hours for your first time through. Just a rough guess. That is taking your time and being organized.

Also you might as well get some new injector o-rings.. you'll have to pull the fuel rail to do this so you might as well replace them. Trying to think of any special tools you will need, you will also want a fuel line disconnect tool, buy them from Autozone for ~$5. Looks like a cheap cheap tool, but it'll do.
