Automatic overdrive and 3 2 1

What is automatic overdrive? And I shifted down to 1 and tried to drive, my car just reved real high but didnt move. Im confused on this? I know 3 is better for going up hills and such.

put your car in overdrive and leave it. You have an automatic car, no need to be shifting except for to hurt your trans.

1 is 1st gear and you were leaving it in first gear, hence why you were revving high. I would not make this a habit.

A 4L60E is an electronic automatic tranny.

Selecting 1, 2, 3 or D is your gear selection. Over drive is when your torque converter locks up...notice how when you drive and you tranny makes that final shift and your revs goes down and you hum along? That's your overdrive...sorta like a 5th gear.

It is the gear after drive, as in the gear over drive (gear). just a different way of saying it. I am sure the Britts. had something to do with it.
Started with trucks many years ago, theres was basically a gear, that once you got on the road that was flat and level your engine would be taken out of torq range.

Just be thankful you don't need to understand "free wheeling transmissions"

Oh I see what your saying. I took off at a red light tonight in 1 and didn't go anywhere after like 25 mph, and then just shifted all the way into D. I hope that didn't hurt anything.

When your in "1" you will stay in first gear. The whole way. Until you shift to 2, 3, or drive.
1st gear runs out at about 30-35ish i think. And then you hit the rev limiter. You wont go anywhere past this. Don't make it a habit.

When you in "2" you will start in first gear, then shift to second. You will stay in second gear untill you shift into 3, or drive.

By the way , that transmission is set to give you the quickest time down the road if you just leave it in drive, you can not out shift it. Manually shifting is just for showing off, or when you are real pist off at another idiot driver
