ok s o im having problems starting my car. Testes the fuel pressure and its 41 at prime but quickely drops to zero and 34 at idle(vacum onthe FPR)
so i have a problem - how do i test the FPR to see if its bad or where can i find a FPR to replace it. I have searched online and can't find anything. Also where can i find a stock fuel pump equivilant for my maro?
If after changing that fuel filter it's still low you can add some fuel line between the regulator and the return line, start the engine and then slowly pinch the fuel line. If the pressure climbs above 41 (or whatever the normal reading should be) you'll know its the fuel regulator thats all ****ed up. DO NOT PINCH THE HOSE COMPLETELY OR ALLOW THE PRESSURE TO BUILD PAST 60psi. If you do serious bad **** can and probably will happen.
If the pressure is low, then it's probably a bad pump or an injector or three leaking.
so i just pick up some fuelline from autozone and attach it to the regulator on the fuel rail. Is other end "open" because that black line attaches to the vacum line assembly. thanks for the help guys
Ok... 41 sounds about right for the fuel pressure at prime, though I think I had 46 last time I checked, but it's too small of a difference to matter. 0 psi at idle is too much of a drop. it should drop a little when it's idling I seem to recall it dropping about 8 psi, but fluctuations between 0 and 35 is too much. I would *guess*, that it's your fuel pump. The fuel can only go one of 2 places, back to the tank (thorugh the fuel pressure regulator) or into the engine (thorugh the injectors). Leaky injectors would cause a drop, but zero seems a bit much. The above test is a means to manually increase the fuel pressure to see if the pump is pumping enough fuel at idle to build pressure. It allows you to pinch the fuel return line, without actually pinching the fuel return line (that would damage the plastic lines that are on the car, so you add a piece of rubber fuel line that you can pinch with a pliers). A Haynes manual should outline this test, browse through it or a Chilton's at the library or autoparts store.
