• CHEAPEST/EASIEST way to repgrogram..

Well, I've put on new tires and I'm about to do a rearend swap, and I want to know the CHEAPEST and EASIEST way to reprogram for new gears and a change in wheel/tire size.

I did a search using keyword reprogram.. I didn't find much.

TByrne offers the "Electronic Speedometer Recalibrator".. but it's 160 dollars. If I have to, I'll get it - but I'd rather not spend that kind of money. Is there any other way? Any input is welcome, thank you!

Governor's not too important, but whatever happens it will need to fix the speedometer and the auto transmission shift points as a result of new gears and changes to the tire size..

I'll be making the swap in the late days of this month, so I'd probably need the recalibrator sooner.. thanks for the offer though!

Makes me happy that my shift points are controlled by the small lump of malformed gray matter rolling around in my melon, rather than my car's ECM...

A lot of people dont bother reprogramming, you just learn how much it's off by. I know mine reads 50 when I'm going 45, and I just try to stick with traffic. Look around at your local mechanics, a lot of them will offer speedo recalibrating. It wont fix your shift points, but it will at least fix the speedo; Around me it costs about $50 or so.

Is not having your shift points correct hurting your performance any?

I had my PCM reflashed at the dealer for 80 bucks. I gave them a y87 auto Vin # from my same year and they easily put it in. My shifts are better now to since it is programmed for the correct gears.

Also when they flash it your speed limiter is brought back to 118 instead of the like 96 it is with those aftermarket speedo recalibrators that you can buy.

I suggest going to your dealer and seeing if they will do it for ya. Its worth it

You have a 1999 model?
The recalibrator from SLP that Tbyrne sells will not work because it doesn't bypass the cruise control stuff correctly. Jet Chip has something to adjust for the gears (up to 3.42 ratio) and can adjust for tire size also.

Hypertech has NOTHING for 1999 models. I've been driving my car with the speedo being off for a long time (it's annoying but doesn't do any harm) until recently when I purchased the custom program PCM from Wester's that Tbyrne sells but it's fairly expensive.

Is not having your shift points correct hurting your performance any?
Yes!! I have an A4 and recently did a 3.08->3.42 swap and performance was HORRIBLE until I just recently got my Westers programming. Now I am happy and can't wait to get to the track

The speedo being off is not that big of an issue, your biggest concern is going to be your shift points. At first I was fine after the swap but after I drove the car about a week I started to notice the computer wasn't liking the gears (took it a bit to learn I guess). It really felt like the computer was holding back power because it was confused.

I recommend having some sort of programming set up before you do the swap and have it done same day. Your cheapest option is probably to find a Y87 VIN and see if a local dealer will flash it to your PCM for you.

Other than that you will have to get custom programming. Although if you have a 2000+ you could use the hypertech. That isn't an option for your 99 though.

The speedo recalibrators DO NOT correct shift points so I wouldn't even waste my money on those since, as I mentioned before, the speedo being off will be the least of your concerns. People with a M5 have a lot less to worry about after a gear swap, I wish I had one :(

The speedo isn't much of a concern because if you go from 3.08->3.42 just take 10% of your current speed and subtract that value from the current speed. Isn't to hard to do that on the fly.

I am happy again with my car after receiving the Westers which corrected my speedo and shift points. The $500 was worth it (well I will know for sure when I hit the track).
SLP CAI, K&N, Whisper Lid, 180* thermo, manual fan switch, 3.42 gears, Auburn Pro LSD, Wester\'s PCM Tuning, TSP Rumbler, High Flow Cat. Best Time: 9.909@71.58 (1/8 mile)

So basically you should get a Wester's custom PCM It will fix your speedo, kill your fuel cutoff and give you a hell of a lot more power. It's worth the outragous price
