  • rebuilding alternator?

I have the alternator off and I want to rebuild it because I think it was making a whine. where would I get a kit and instructions on how to do it? thanks.

    and I have a 1996 3.8 camaro.

NAPA Auto Parts may carry the kit. Sorry I can not give a definate answer. However, from experience I can offer two alternatives.

    1) You can buy a rebuilt alternator which comes assembled with new parts inside. All you do is bolt it in. ( With a kit you have to take the alternator apart, clean it, put in new parts, lose a screw or two, put the thing together again and then install the alternator.) Many rebuilt aternators carry a warranty.

    2) Buy a NEW alternator from the dealer. Here in WV I buy from a GM distributor called A&E Auto Parts. They are not a dealer but carry new GM parts. This is the most expensive way to go.

correct me if im wrong, but the alternators on our cars, 96 year models anyways, are not serviceable. Thats the info ive found anyway from Mitchell. Hence to why our alt. cases, or at least mine anyways, are held together by rivets and not conventional screws and bolts.

Hey CAMAROWIDBASS, how happy are you with that alternator from 4alterstart?? I'm looking at getting one for my 95, but I've been warned by many people to beware of inexpensive HO alternators. Just curious if you have had any problems....

ive had 0 problems with it, i like it a lot. And for 200 shipped to your door with lifetime warantee you cant go wrong.

Although the amp rating is the same on my HO as stock at idle which is 800 RPMS, but just give it gas and it kicks in at anything above 1k.
