  • Cam pulse not detected

Hi, I have a 94 3.4 camaro and had a code cam sensor error so I just changed the camshaft position sensor. The problem I'm having is the car is hard starting, sometimes rough idle and running sluggish and runs rich (smell gas). I hooked up a scanner while it was running and noticed the cam sensor error code was still present and a cam pulse not detected. I then went under the hood disconnected the harness from the camshaft position sensor and tested the harness side voltage and there was none(0), Haynes says there should be around 10-12. I also checked the wires in the harness all the way to the fuse box under the hood and it all looks good (no tears, melts, repairs present). One other thing, Haynes says that the harness for the camshaft position sensor should be a pink(+)and pink/black(-), I have 2 reds and a black wire is this correct? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my problem could be? I'm intending on giving it a tune up (plugs and wires) but don't want to just throw parts at this problem, so any help is greatly appreciated. Oh I also have code for EGR solenoids 1,2,3 failure but I don't know if this would be related because I had another 94 that I replaced everything (EGR,wiring harness etc) and still had that code coming up. Thanks for any help.

Not sure about your CPS, but I'm pretty sure the reason you're still getting EGR codes even after you've replaced the valve is because the EGR passageway in the upper manifold is packed full of carbon crud.
In order to access and clean this passage you have to remove the upper manifold and take out the bolt just under the throttle body. (see post #10 here:http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=94019)

I used a metal coathanger and carb cleaner to clean mine out and have had no EGR codes since.

In NY, if your car is older than 94....or 96, in any case, you do not need to pass emissions.

You just need to pass visually (cat and muffler), but no emissions test.

Its getting harder and harder to pull that off in California.

But I just keep my Camaro legal just to spare the headache
