  • changed oil, now a noise from under the car

Friday I had my oil changed by PepBoys since I'm at college. I showed up around 4, and I didn't get my car back from off the lift until about 7:05 (I sat there forever listening to them say "15 more minutes"... as you hear my car alarm go off every 10 minutes.). As I pull out of the parking lot onto the main road I hear a vibration noise that feels like it's coming from the hump right behind the glove box. I empty out the center console to make sure there is nothing loose giggling around. The noise then sounds like it's coming from right under my car. I step on the breaks and the noise becomes even louder until the car comes to a complete stop. I thought it was my breaks for a moment. Late for work I say I'll deal with it later. After work, I turn the car on and the noise is loud as all hell, banging against something (that ruled out my break theory), then it just stops. I pop the car until reverse and the noise happens again as I step on the gas and slowly back out.

I show back up Sunday morning after putting only 5 miles on the car since the oil change. 5 hours later, they finally look at it and say my exhaust is hitting a metal cross-bar; next to the oil pan and transmission mount. In turn that is causing the noise and the vibration that I feel under the car. Now, here is my question: Why in holy hell would that happen after an oil change?

I asked them if they saw any missing/loose harnesses, and they said no. Nor would they attempt to fix it. They told me to take it to an exhaust place to get it fixed. Woot. More money to spend. Money I don't have.:stp:

It is a comon problem. Just take any pry bar that you can find and place it between the pipe and crossmember. Without much force at all you can easily pry the pipe back into position, off of the crossmember.

    Cost for repair = $0.00

I'll give that a shot when I somehow find a way to jack the car up high enough for me to get under it. I hate being 3 inches off the ground :p

You dont even have to jack it up. I reached right under and the entire job took about 2 minutes.

If you want to jack your car up, drive onto some 2x6's. When I do that I can get a jack under my car.
