  • fwd vs. rwd 3800

    Iwas wondering if there was any difference between the front wheel drive 3800 found in the monte carlo's and the grand prix gt's and the impalas, etc.

    Beside the obvious intake differences, which could easily be taken care of, is there any major differences, like different mounting points or the tranny not bolting up properly?

    Maybe the postion of the coil packs, but I am wondering about anything major.

    Basically, could you take a very low mileage 3800 out of a wrecked fwd and swap it in to your f-body without fabrication except intake and other minor details?

    I dont see why not.. engine wise they are almost exactly the same.. all you really need to change is the upper intake, bolt on a new tranny, and headers.. it shuld work..

    i meen.. you are looking at the heads, internals, and block.. you may need a few parts like alternator, water pump, and oil pan.. but you will probably allready have those from the old engine..

      Swap heads, injectors are located in different orientation. Don't know if it's neccessary though

        Well, I am asking b/c it seems to be easier to obtain a 3800II that is from a wrecked fwd, than one from a wrecked f-body, considering the many different types of fwd cars it is found in.

        I wanted to get one to start building up, so when my motor starts to see the light at the end of the tunnel or when I had it the way I wanted it, I could swap it. I wanted to get one that is fairly new w/ very low miles (~35k). It is gonna be hard to find one out of a wrecked f-body, but if I could, I would obviously get that one.

        If finding one that is not originally from an f-bod is not an option, then I was wondering how much different the block and heads and mounting and tranny bolt pattern, etc. is from a fwd to an rwd.

        Like I stated in the first thread, of course intake and exhaust manifolds would be different. As well as other little things, that is expected. That stuff is generally easy to deal with and can be swapped from one motor to another.

        I guess my biggest questions are about how the 4L60E tranny bolts up to it (if it does). And if the motor will mount correctly, like OEM into our RWD format.

        There is nothing wrong w/ my motor. It only has 50k on it and runs really strong, but I want to buy a project motor and built it inside and out. And it just seems easier to get a hold of a low mileage fwd 3800, but if I get lucky enough to find a low mileage wrecked f-body, of course I would buy that motor, if the price was right.

          fwd & rwd 3800 Series II are same block.

            all yrs 3800 Series II, I think they debuted in the 95 Bonnies. Series I blocks may also bolt up the same, but remeber, the N/A Series II are jsut as powerful as the supercharged Series I motors.

              I know one thing for certain. The throttle body wont bolt up to your intake manifold (yes I did try this). I have recently learned that we use the same intake manifold GASKET as the FWD crowd. Hmmmmm.
              All the major components are the same with the L36 vin K engines. Intakes and TBs are different on the FWD. Just keep your intake/tb/injectors and such and bolt them onto your new block.
