On the 3.4 I usually spin the starter until it's facing backwards and upside-down. Then it comes right out.

take a rubber mallet & whack it a few times to get loose. The starter on the 2.8 came out easy, & the 3.4 starter never left the motor.

thanks for the help guys, but i can't get this thing out. i need about a 1/2 inch more clearance on the manifolds and oil pan to get it to move, if i'm doing it right. i think i'm SOL, i'm seeing why the car dealer wanted $400 to install a new one. ugh :(

sorry but you'll have to remove that pipe underneath the starter to get the starter out

Not true. Do it the exact way I said and it will come out. It'll still be tight but it WILL come out.

Easiest way to remove a starter . . . start with getting a Haynes manual ;)

I got a haynes, didn't say much, it says with 98+ V8's the exhaust has to come down. but i'm not sure about my 6, looks like i'll take it down anyway, i tried for a few hours last night and got no where, sorry Dan90RS it's not workin for me.

As easy as it is to drop the y-pipe a few inches from the exhaust manifolds, I think that would be your best bet.

dont take the Y pipe off, you will just end up breakin bolts off and other more time consuming thngs.

I chaged my starter last winter, all you gotta do is get a big "C" clamp, put it on one side of the Y pipe, and the other end over the side pinch weld under your rocker panel. Then just tighten it enough so it pulls the Y pipe over towards the passenger side a little. Starter will drop right out. If you dont have a C clamp, just get a friend to come over and pull on it, you dont need much movement at all. Hope that helps.
