Could be plug wires. When I finished my cam install we mixed up some of the plug wires. I could get her to run, and even idle, but she back fired horribly, shook horribly, and was hard to get to rev up. If I put her in gear, she would stall out unless I held it at 3K or so, which is where the backfiring stopped. I'll tell you something though, if you could ignore the backfiring, she sounded amazing; must have got the firing order somewhat similar to an 8 :)

first of all, we never took out any of the plugs or wires, they stayed in the whole time, however i "may" have burnt a wire in the process.
and bigbrian, i will look for this "misfiring" of the tb. buy even if it is doing that, what does that mean and how can i fix it??
Adjust the valves correctly. If it's backfiring out of the TB atleast one intake valve is open while the cylinder if firing.
so that would mean the rockers are too tight? it just doesn't make sense because we adjusted them properly i swear.
i will check however for this "misfiring" and let you guys know, i'd be really upset ifi had to take everything apart again, i have to work at 4 a.m. so i'm going to bed but feel free to add anything else, i will check back in the morning.
The thing is, yes you are confident that they are tightened properly.... but in reality, the valve is just barely overtightened enough to leave that valve cracked slightly open at all times...
The smoke from your engine compartment is normal after doing major work like you had done. Oily hand prints burn off the exhaust and such. After a few minutes that should stop. How long have you had the motor running since it has been back together? Sometimes a lifter will pump up and not bleed down till the motor runs at about 2000 rpm for a few minutes after warming up.
well, if is a hanged valve, check vaccuum, then check if it "sucks" air from the exhaust, improperly adjusted exhaust valves can cause this problem, and for the intake valves, if them are improperly adjusted, can cause backfires trough the TB, check all basics (sparks, firing order, properly connected all wires/sensors, crank sensor, MAP vaccuum, ETC...) if it suck air from the exhaust, or run low vaccum, you must take the valve covers off and adjust the valves;)

yes, the smoke did stop eventually.
I have had it running for a couple of times for about 3 or 4 minutes each time.
my uncle came over today with his diagnostic tools but we couldn't get the engine to stay on long enough to get a reading, in fact the car started to spit gas out of the tail pipes! Either way, he feels we tightened the rockers down wrong, but thinks if we can fix it than everything will be OK. So i took the last 2 hours to tear it all apart again (totally counter productive  )
but since its the 2nd time taking it apart and since all the bolts and gaskets are fresh i did in a couple hours what first took me a couple weeks!
anyhow, my uncle thinks we tightened the rockers down when cylinder 4 was in firing position as opposed to firing position for cylinder 1.
I hope he's right.... we're gonna put it all back together in a couple days (got to wait for new spark plugs to come in since the ones now are prolly soaked in gasoline)
he really knows what he's doing so i'm pretty confident this will turn out OK.
Hey guys. For starters I’ve always been a big car guy, I love all types of cars and can appreciate all types of engineering. I’ve always been a Chevy...
