  • High RPMs?

Hey guys, I have a 1998 camaro v6 y87 package. I was wondering if idleing at 950rpm is high. In the morning its naturally higher, at 1250rpms. My friends cars and my dad's idle at 750rpm. My one of my friend's own a mazda6 and the other owns a mustang gt and my dad owns a 2005 GTO. I thought that maybe mine idles higher because its a v6, but then i noticed my friends mazda idles at 750rpm. I also noticed that the inside of my pipes are getting black. Am I running too rich? Would a good tune drop the rpms down? Thanks!

The reason why im wondering is because I cant get more than 220 miles to the tank even with excellent driving. (No beating).

950 in gear, or in Park and/or Neutral?

950rpms in Park is not high, it is ok.

As for the black exhaust, could be running slightly rich, but I would not worry too much about it. The inside of my pipes have been black forever, and it does not cause any issues.

950 is high, 750 is about right. Mine has always idled at 750. My other cars have always been at 750. If yours has an IAC valve, check it. Also check for vacuum leaks.

dead on 1K warm, 1200 cold morning. Y87 is dual exhaust muffler and a couple suspension upgrades i believe, no effect on engine speed.

1500 on a cold morning, let it run, drops to 1200, then to 1000/950. Non-Y87 Firebird.

Thanks guys on your input, I think I am going to get it tuned anyways. It also trys to stall at startup sometimes, it sounds camm'd which is sweet:D

That sounds like a vacuum leak. The PCM commands the idle to be 775 in P/N and 725 in Drive when the ECT is above 158* F.

not really, the majority of v6 3.8L camaros idle between 900-1100rpm

Something is wrong when it idles that high. It should be at 750.

                              The 99+ is at 650-750 but the 98+ 900
