so my car really overheated today. i had been driving for about an hour total and i pulled into traffic after i picked up a friend of mine. all the sudden the temp gauge starts spiking to 260! and we started smelling antifreeze. i didn't hit or scrape anything. pulled off the road and there's antifreeze pouring out from the bottom of the car. as best as i could tell it was coming out the reservoir cap. we let it sit with the hood open and went to napa and got some more dexcool. poured some in and when the temp gauge got below 210 we cranked it up. it ran good, until a minute later when the radiator fluid started pouring out again.
theres definatly a huge pressure build up. Miles? Year? i suggest you further investigate where the leak comes from by filling it up, watching and waiting till you see where it comes out. watch underneath the car as well as under the hood.

2000 v6 5speed, 130,000ish miles. it's at the mechanics and wont hear back till tomorrow. when i was there they had tested the pressure and said it was fine on that end. they suggested it could be a thermostat?

Reason: added miles
Usually either a stuck T-stat or a bad water pump. Whatever it is, is not allowing fluid circulation through the radiator. Luckily cooling systems are pretty simple.
Sounds like a stuck thermostat. My girlfriends car did the same thing.. except it never poured out.
Btw, how can a belt driven pump go bad? I was just looking at mine today and it seems like a really solid setup. I dunno what the inner parts look like but I imagine it's not more than a shaft between the pulley and blades.
If you didn't then you're lucky you didn't blow a gasket. That coulda been really bad.
i talked to the mechanic. he said the dexcool is all corroded and the entire system needs to be flushed. the radiator needs to be completely replaced. water pump might need to be replaced. i'll pm you kristen if need be. i should get bout 10-15% off gm parts cause i work at lowes but the radiator is still expensive. the mechanic wanted $520! i got another one to offer 320. the thermostat is good still.
edit: i will not put dexcool in another car ever.

Yes dexacool is crap, my dad has worked for GM for 40 years and has always said it is crap. For radiators, I got mine at Autozone if you have them there for $180 they come universal with the in/out lines for an auto if needed. I switched out my 96' Camaro with green fluid in 99' after the warranty was up.

What's happening is it's stuck...as it boils due to the overheat it tends backout through the overflow and come gushing the reservior. I see it all the time at the shop...
Becareful not to keep overheating...or bye bye head gasket.

Whoops...read your update...replace the stat too. I run the green stuff...hated dexcool since day one.
Check out this picture of the waterpump from my 72. They can go bad over time but I doubt your is in this condition.
It's not something easy like the fans didn't come on or something?

i dont have that kind of luck. when it comes to something i love it takes a lot of work or money... or both. the other mechanic is getting it tomorrow and should be finished working on it by saturday morning.
Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
