• New season, Same Old Rattles!!!

I've read several posts about the different rattles that our cars make, however after a year I'm still having rattles. The main rattle is at low RPM's, usually when I'm pulling into my driveway. Sounds like it's coming from around the tranny/cat area. I have put a new cat on and when I'm under the car and bang on the exhaust, there is no rattle. For those who have had heat shield rattles, can you describe under which situations they occurs. And have any of you had tranny rattles?

Mine happens when the engine is hot and happens at even lower speeds (ie. if I just let the car role using the clutch)

I had that problem for a while and found out it was a few rocks in between some heat shields. Also, try crawling underneath your car and see if anything looks loose. Grab piecs that look like they shouldn't move and see if they wiggle ANY! The slightest bit of play can make a lot of noise.

          Good luck.

I'll see what I can find next time I'm changing my oil or something.

Today i was underneith my car and I knoticed that the Y pipe sits pretty close inbetween the tranny and the oil pan. I'm thinking that, that might be the cause of the rattles.

I have the same rattle on my 99 A4. Usually at idle or low speed (< 20). After doing searching for other threads I figure it is my heat shield or cat. I went under the car and can't see where the heat shield is rattling. I need to check the cat.

Welcome to the club though. It is quite annoying hearing it and not being able to find it!
