you said that the car still cools ok, so if you get the sludge/gunk out and put in some green your car should still cool alright with the added bonus of not having the gunk inside anymore. if you have no blockage now, taking the blocking material out surely won't cause a block.
you may still want to check/replace the gasket if you think its not providing a good seal anymore.
