• How much slower will a new firebird be than my old 94 trans am?

Firebird vs Trans Am
I used to have a 94 Trans Am, and at the time I thought it was the quickest thing in the world. It would dust my friends 5.0 mustang so I was happy. Now that I am hearing about some of the new 3.8L firebirds, I am wondering how much faster my lt1 was than the new v6 birds. (I’m thinking not that much)I ran a 14.8 at the track with it twice. I was happy with that at the time, but still think it could have gone mid 15's. It was auto and had a k&n and flow master exhaust. (What should it have ran a mid 14??) What do the firebirds run low to mid 15's? I know the Trans am had a little more top end, and maybe more torque, but how would you compare my old trans am, to a 2000 firebird, 5 speed with the Y87 performance package? (what gearing did my TA have, and what gear would the bird with the y87 have)
I'm not asking to make the v6 a drag car, I just want to know how the current v6's hang with the old Lt1's.
Thanks, Shane

I think you could get a lot faster with your current LT1 at the track. My buddies 94 or 95 Z28 ran a 13.6 with intake, exhaust, and street tires.

You also can't beat the sound of a V8. Nothing on a V6 can compare.

As far as newer V6 vs mid 90's LT1's..stock for stock the 6 will not hang with them. Most of the 3.8's are in the 15 second range..weather it be high, mid, or low. With a few mods they can be brought down to high 14's. There's a lot of factors..driver, auto vs. manual, and mods done. LT1's with a lot of miles are of course going to be slower than when they came right out of the factory. How many miles are on your Trans-Am?

..After looking at your web page, it looks like you have to sell your car..If you can't go with another V8, I'd say get the 2000 Firebird. Insurance may also be cheaper than your current car...and may consume less gas.

yeah lt1's are faster. I think they run 14.0 or so while v6's run mid 15's. V6 will save you gas money, and insurance. I think the old lt1's had 275HP while the v6's even the newer ones only have 200HP, you would need some significant mods to match that power. I would say if you want to save some money, have a newer body style, and chill in this great forum , get a V6 and mod it.

14.8 is not that good for an LT1. I have seen TA's run in the mid 14's though. I've also driven one and felt it was significantly slower than my blown V6. I believe the reason for this is because the TA is too heavy. If you get a Firebird, yes it will be slower stock, but you could lighten it up a bit and add a few mods and be able to match or beat 14.8 and get better gas mileage ;)

BTW, both cars are very nice. How many miles are on the TA?
