So i got in my car today and started it. And it went up to 1200 rpms and then like 3 secs later cut off. I repeatedly did this 5 times. To make it stop i reved my engine up to 4000 rpms, and help it there for a minute. What would cause this to occur? By the way i have a low input MAF sensor. Also, last week the car would just shoot up to 1200 rpms but when i put it in gear it would go away.

check to make sure the vacuum line on the side of the throttle body is still on there, sometimes that likes to pop off and you think your engine is going to explode -

Take out the IAC valve and clean it with throttle body cleaner. Fixed this EXACT problem for me.
