I have a loud grinding noise in the rear end. It increases with speed, and is higher in intensity if I am giving it a little gas vs coasting, at comparable speeds. So far, my ideas are a drum brake issue, a differential issue, or possibly a u joint issue. I have not been able to pinpoint if it is coming from one side or the middle, though if it is coming from a side, it is the passenger side. Any advice to help narrow it down? Any other symptoms I should look for that might help narrow it down?

Re: grinding in rear...
well, Ive not even looked at it much yet...just was looking for some ideas to narrow it down and save some time...though I think its the brake drum, now. Checked the temp on them when I got home from a drive, and the passenger side one was cooking. So Im guessing either an issue with the drum or the e-brake?

Re: grinding in rear...
happens all the time, a bit louder when I am giving it gas...to be honest, Ive suspected brakes more than anything, because it sounds exactly how a scraping brake sounds...however, since Ive not dealt with anything of this sort in this particular car, or with drum brakes, for that matter, I figured the more info I had specific to this car before I put time into, the less time I'd end up spending ;) That, and my handy repair manual mentions the differential and the u joint for that symptom, not the brakes. Of course, that thing sucks more than it helps, but I like to cover all the bases.

Re: grinding in rear...
Check for the oil in the rear differential just to be sure there is some in there. As for the drum brakes I don't think that can be it, because they would make a SHHH sound when you drive, or maybe will jam and the tire will not go forward; had that happen to me in a 93 caprice.
