I just got my car a few weeks ago. It is a 1995 Camaro 3.4L, auto. The car does just fine but when i step on the throttle it gets wierd. At between 4000-5000 rpms the car kind of slows, or hesitates, you can really feel it. Another guy i talked to had heard this before but i didnt get to finish my conversation with him. I replaced the fuel filter,(which desperately needed to be done)and it helped a little bit, but barely. What, if anything, is wrong and what should i try to fix it? Thanks

well besides it being a 3.4 you may want to replace the plugs and wires if they have not been changed in a while.

its means that 3.4 and 3.8's basically most v6's fall on their face at high rpms and out of first gear
i would try change the plugs and wires also you may need a new cat
does it gradually slow as the rpms go up or does it feel like its not getting any gas all of the sudden?

it feels like it's not getting gas all of the sudden. Only does it for a brief moment and then continues as normal. What could that be?

are you hitting your rev limiter? that will cause you to have fuel cut off briefly.

I had a similar problem on my 3.4L, it turned out to be melted/cracked wires going to my EGR (black thing on passenger side exhaust manifold).
When the RPM’s got to 4500rpm’s the engine would lean out and hesitate.

If those wires look o.k. rev the car in neutral and see if it hesitates. If it doesn't you could have a tranny/torque converter problem. If it does, you probably have an air/fuel problem.

-Check your fuel pressure or take it to a shop to have it checked.
-Disconnect the EGR valve (just unplug it) and see if the problem goes away. Don’t drive it to long with it disconnected though.

okay, i rev'd it in neutral and i couldnt feel that it was hesitating...it seemed to rev just fine. I checked those wires and they seem to be okay. I am going back out to look again in a minute. I unplugged the EGR valve thing and it still did it. I took it out for a short drive like that...i got on it 3 different times...the first and second time it did it right at 4400 RPM's both times.....the third time it didntdo it at all. What else should i check for?

This might sound a little strange, but check the air filter. I've ran across a similar problem in the past and the guys cheapo paper air filter was black and crusty. Other than that, just stick to basic tune up items. If those don't cure your problem, it's good preventive maintenance.

I was having the same problem with mine before we sold it. Well I was also having a water leak but that was a seperate issue.

It could be the cat. Possibly melted and stopped up or something. This will give you extra back preasure and will actually give you better off the line power but kill your top end. Since I never fixed mine though it's not definate what the problem was. This was just my uncle's guess because we couldn't find anything else wrong. Oh yeah, he's a mechanic and has fixed a problem with a clogged cat before. In hope of fixing it I changed the fuel filter, plugs and wires with no change.

I know it was a 3.4V6 and that it never really had that much of a top end but when a an Escort ZX2 pulls you on the top end and then you catch back up quickly when you shift to the next gear only to let it pull away from you again when you get into the upper rpm's, something is just not right.

I'm working on a custom 3" super high flow cat on my current car. After that it should scream at the upper rpms.

anybody think it might be the fuel pump, my dad's fuel pump started going bad on his truck and it would accelerate ok sometime but at others it would accelerate like a slug.

Try running 91 octane (or 93, whatever you have) gas for a few days. If that takes care of it, that means you're engine is most likely leaning out under heavy load, beginning to knock, and the PCM is backing the timing off.
Do you have aftermarket coils or anything?
I put the Accels on my 95, and widened the plug gap, and started noticing the same thing. I started using 91 octane, and it went away.
I'm sure what I had was the exact same thing, same rpm range, the car is hauling *** , then it suddenly feels like you let off the gas for a bit, and then it kicks back in.

Mine would hesitate in the 2nd to third shift and right now I have a bad fuel pump.

I'd check the plugs and plug wires....mainly plug wires. That's happened to me before twice and I just had to replace the plug wires.
