  • Cooked PCM?

So I had just installed an oxygen sim and I went to clear the codes. Usually the way I do this when I'm in a hurry is to start the car, remove both PCM fuses, turn off the car, and then insert the fuses. Well, today I wasn't paying very much attention and accidentally reinserted the fuses with the car running. When I turned off and then started the car, it was very hard to turn over, and then it idled very low and erratically. I revved the car a bit and then it died. During this the reduced engine power light was on. I waited a minute and then started the car again, and it was a little easier to turn over, but still not what it used to be. It was able to rev, but it was extremely rough. The reduced power light wasn't on anymore. I turned it off and repeated, and it was slightly better, but still seemed a a little rough. Did I mess something up permanently?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Mike

          2000.

I just took it out for a drive around the neighborhood, so nothing hard. For the first few minutes it was running extremely rough, but after that it seemed ok. I didn't get on it real hard, so I don't know for sure. I'll take it out more if I have time later, but I'm still open to ideas as to what I did.

My initial vote is MAF. Are you setting any codes?

I haven't set any codes yet, but like I said I only took it around the neighborhood a few times.

                  Re: Cooked PCM?

For future reference, i wouldn't reset your PCM that way anymore. Since the fuses didn't fry it might be possible that the surge in power caused your pcm to need to be reflashed?

                    Re: Cooked PCM?

Yeah, I know I shouldn't be doing it I'm just stupid :slap:. It's just easier than disconnecting the battery and I don't lose my radio settings. I think from now on I'll do it the right way, using a ODBII reader. By reflashed, do you mean cleared again or similar to getting it retuned with a full flash? If everything stays normal while I'm driving should I assume it's ok or that there is a lurking problem?

To the others who said MAF, is there any way I can test that if no codes are being set?

                      Re: Cooked PCM?

Yup, unplug the MAF and see if it runs better.

unplug it. and by reflashed i mean get a full flash back to stock....but if it runs okay now then it may have just needed a few cycles to reset itself

I didn't get a chance to drive it today but I will definately take it out tomorrow and see how it runs, both with and without the MAF. Thanks everyone for all your help, this forum is great.

Have you tried the normal pcm fix? unplug the battery for 30 min.
