If I let my car idle and get hot, the fan automatically kicks on when the temp reaches 220 degrees.

Will your car pass 220 degrees without the fan turning on?

This is why I installed the SLP fan switch. Pull into a drive through or stuck in traffic, flip the switch. My temp rarely rises above 180 degrees, even in the hot Miami sun. I highly recommend the fan switch.

I would check the fuses, fan relay, wiring, etc. Might be a bad temp sensor for the fan circuit.

Why do you cruise with the heat on when it is hot outside?
idk i guess i have a vague idea that it will help cool the engine.

where did u get the slp fan switch? i believe that kit will work on my car just as it did yours correct? people will say do it yourself and save them money but i'd rather it be put together for me already. How was the install? and once again, where can i get that kit?

Running with the heat on is not going to cool the engine enough. It will only overheat the driver...

      Thunderracing.com for the SLP switch.

It was a simple install. However, I think you may have a power or wiring problem somewhere. If you have a power issue the fan switch will not work until you resolve it.

Really? But I just changed my driver fluid. Maybe I added too much antifreeze...

Sure it does. I've done this more times than I wish to remember. It won't bring the engine down to 210, but it keeps the engine from overheating.

              Re: overheating problem.

I have a 3.4 1993 Firebird and was experiencing the same problem as described. I went to SLP's site, bought the manual fan switch. The install is really straight forward, easy, and only took about an hour. I put my switch in the ashtray where it would be out of sight. I say its well worth the money not to pull my hair out cutting wires, soldering wires and crimping connections. Heres a pic of my switch.

                      update:

my fans don't come on at all, i let the car idle today to about 245 degrees and the fan didn't come on once. I also switched the fan relay out for one that i KNOW is working on my brothers 3.4 camaro and the fan still did not come on. So now i can safely say that it is not the fan relay that is bad. so what is the next logical step after the fan relays?

fan fuse, then check the fan motor. gl.

                            Re: overheating problem.

When I get home from work today I will look through my repair manual and see if I can get you some info. I would start by following the wiring harness coming from the fan motor itself. Make sure it is plugged in and follow it along its path. If the harness is good then there must be a loss of electrical power somewhere. The fan should run with the A/C on so I would put the selector on MAX A/C while you are troubleshooting this. Just watch your fingers, you might shake a wire and the fan might just start running. Be careful.

Without a manual fan switch the only way to start the fan is to run the A/C, unless you let the car get really hot, but that could lead to bigger problems.

I will look at the wiring diagrams when I get home and send you some more info.

i will check the wiring and try turning the a/c on, and will await more info from you.

                              thanks

yeh, just jump it with the battery. Hopefully it will not work, then you can replace the fan motor. However if it works...good luck trying to find the break.
