    Re: overheating problem.

update: used the voltage tester to test both the 10 amp fuse and socket where the fan relay goes. They both lit the light when i touched them with the rod, so therefore they are getting power right? Either way, i replaced the fuse and relay with new ones just for the hell of it. now what should i do? can i test the coolant temp sensors even though they are both brand new? my gauge one works i know that for a fact and the one for the pcm is a pain in the balls to get to unless you have the uim off the car.

whats the next logical step here?

    thanks

      Re: overheating problem.

if you do not have refrigerant in your a/c, your fan will not turn on when you turn your a/c on. hook up your fan to a 12v source to see if your fan motor is good. if it is, try idling your car to about 221* and see if your fan turns on then, i think this is the stock setting to turn the fan on. if the fan turns on when your engine temp reaches 221* then all is good. if you want your fan to turn on with the a/c, you need to refill your a/c with freon.

          Re: overheating problem.

i don't know if this is the right way to do it, so do this at your own risk. i connected my jumper cables to the battery, then i clipped two wires at the other end, i took the plug off the fan motor, you will see 2 terminals in the socket. i then touched the two wires with the terminals of the fan. when i saw that the fan turned on, i disconnected the wires quickly. that's how i tested my fan motor.

              Re: overheating problem.

I use small wire for my "test" jumpers. Basically a 12 gauge wire with alligator clips attached to the ends.

This would determine if your fan motor is no good.

You would need to unplug the harness from the fan motor and then connect the + and - wires to it to see if it turns on. My test jump wire also has a fuse installed in it just in case it gets grounded somewhere. It works really well.

Since the A/C switch will not activate the fan without freon in it your only alternative is to get the car hot, which I don't recommend. I would go with a manual fan switch.

I am not confident about troubleshooting the PCM and why it is not turning the fan on. However, if this test gets the fan to run then you will be all set if you install a manual fan switch.

                update:

after the new relay and fuse were installed still not turning on at proper temps.

i will now proceed to test the fan itself with a 12v source. please keep with this thread, we are narrowing things down!!

btw should i just buy a new radiator fan motor? i mean its only like 25 dollars, i can replace that and then see if it works.

I wouldn't. Why waste the money. Hotwire the fan and see if it runs. If it does then your problem is somewhere in the temp sender circuit or the ECM. If the fan runs when you hotwire it the I think the easiest way to fix this is a manual switch.

So, next step - hotwire the fan and let's see what happens.

unless you ever want to sell it...don't think the new buyer will be keen on having to turn on the fans manually

Correct. But at least he won't overheat his engine all summer long. Once he figures out if the fan motor is good or bad then he can troubleshoot the cause for it not coming on.

don't forget you then have the power to turn it on whenever u want to, it's a bonus imo. plus it's always cool to have an extra switch or two to playy with. if the fan motor works, then i will buy the kit tht you bought nascar.

That is my advice. I use mine all the time. If I do not have the A/C on I hit the switch and my car runs between 170 and 185 or so (160 t-stat). I like it to run cool, especially in the heat down here.

As you know, you can build your own cheaper, but I went with the SLP for several reasons and I am very happy with it. Mine is mounted right below the lighter outlet. As shown in the pics...
