  • What causes a tranny to shift back and forth??

Just wondering what causes a tranny to be shifting while driving at a steady speed...I heard a while back it could be a selenoid. Is this the same reason why some autos won't shift into higher gears, kinda like won't go into 3rd or 4th??

On the newer cars they are eletronicly controled with the ECU and selonoild.
Older cars have mechancal / hydraulicly controled with valves, modulators and hydraulic servos controled by engine vaccume and or throttle cable linkage and pump presssures.

you might be fooled by torque convertor lockup. with the newer 4l60e's i seem to get a torque seeking behavior at particular speeds/loads. the pcm will lockup the convertor, change its mind and unlock. it will then just do this repeatedly. dont drive at that speed. speed up or slow down.

of course the lockup for the t/c could just be slipping as well.
