What is more likley to cause the smell of gas vapor in the cabin, a bad Vapor Canister, or a bad vapor purge valve, or bad vapor selinoid? Or all three.

Car threw P1441. And now I am getting gas fumes in the cabin.

After reading this thread Caninster Purge I am pretty sure what I need to do to find the problem.

From the above I know how to test the valve for a bad canister, is there a way to test the valve and seleniod.

If it is a bad canister, the manual says I should clear the vacums lines with the EVAP tool thingamajig with nitrogen. I don't have a that special tool, will compressed air work.

    oh yeah....96 3.8 Bird.

i would think that it's the canister. i had both go on me at different times. i got the bad fuel smell when it was the canister.

the seleniod is held on with one bolt, one clamp line and one wire harness. takes all of 1 min to take out and put back in. so to test it...i just got a new one and changed it. that wasn't my problem so just put my old one back in and returned the seleniod. did that all in the autozone parking lot!

instead of compressed air, you could try those cans of computer duster. They are about $4 and composed of nitrogen and r4.

Well since the car is falling apart and its my wifes daily driver we just gotta get it to past smog one more time and its getting traded in later this summer. She wants a CRV :( ... I got a code reader, so I should be able to delete the codes, and as long as it past the sniffer we should be good.

a 96 bird wolnt use a sniffer, the emissions is checked with the OBDII system

if you clear the codes, it goes into relearn mode, and is an auto fail

at least thats how it is here, not sure how it is in your state

Did you ever fix this error code? I'm seeing the EXACT same thing and I'm assuming you had to find a fix by now?

              Just an update...

I'm pretty sure I'm one of the lucky ones that had this SES light go off due to the gas cap not being threaded properly. The light went off (~4 hours ago) and I took it to get it inspected right away -- it passed!
