security light

while i was driving tonight my security light poped on, and i just figured that it was due to a dirty key

cleaned the key and everything, and tried using a different key, but it keeps coming on, then after a few min of driving it will turn off, then a few min later it turns back on

what could the problem be?

i use my car every day and i just enrolled in a 6 week summer course, i cant afford to miss a class due to the short time, so i need to figure out what the problem is quick

are your door closing tight? if your door isn't closed, or moving, it might not be triggering your switch.

i didnt realize the doors have anything to do with it, but i am pretty sure they are fine?

my security light has been on since i bought the car. it's never been a problem for me. just kind of annoying.

Same here. Eventually, maybe, if I get inclined, I'll get into the dash and either take the light out or tape over it. Been quite a few years, so I doubt that's gonna happen. Unless it's causing problems with start-up, I wouldn't sweat it.

If you tried two different keys with the same result, the most likely cause is the ignition cylinder. Specifically the two little tiny wires that attach to the device in the cylinder that reads the resistor in the key. For a cheap fix, the system can be bypassed. I'm sure there's a writup here somewhere on how to do it. For a propper repair, the ignition cylinder and keys would need to be replaced. I think I did a writup a while back on how to do that.

this is how you change the key cylinder. the wires are begining to break, so you keep getting a connection and then not and then you get one then not. eventually they will fully break and you wont be able to start your car.

using non oem keys does make a diffrence, gm uses bigger resistor chips then most aftermarket companys.

Your VATS (Security) system is failing. Two ways to correct it. One, as stated above, is to remove and replace your lock cylinder along with new keys. Or, bypass it...
