  • You guys will shoot me even for asking about hose repair tape

You see, I'm looking to drive to Pensacola from New Orleans this weekend.

Naturally, the heater hose right beneath the alternator developed a small, pin-head size leak, and it was spewing coolant. Nobody around, not even GM dealers, have the part I need (I already have it backordered at gmpartsdirect.com).

Now I know this is a bad idea, but I thought I'd at least ask. Autozone has this hose repair tape for $2.99. Does anyone know if it's a complete waste of money? Do you think it would survive a 8 hour round trip drive? Should I even be thinking this?

3.8 98 Camaro, by the way.

I don't see why not. I have seen Duct Tape do wonders with hose leaks. Just be sure to keep an eye on your coolant levels and carry extra with you. It also wouldn't hurt tto over fill your overflow resevoir. That is my .02

Thanks for the help fellas, but after looking at the hose, the area around the hole is so limp it's like paper. Nothing's going to fix this. No dealer in Louisiana seems to have it, and gmpartsdirect has backordered it. I think I'll go to a junkyard and see if I can't find one.

There's a previous thread about this hose. Here's a picture, if I can figure out how to upload it.

In a pinch, you can run the system with the radiator cap loose (not off, though). You will still get cooling from the circulating water, just no pressure. That will take the stress off that hose. I've done this many times LOL. Heck, my radiator cap lost its ability to hold pressure, and the system worked just fine. The cap was leaking, so the pathway to the resovoir tank was permanently open. Car ran just fine. Once I realized it though, I did replace it. But running with a loosened cap will work.

of course it is true, you are buying quality gm parts here. if $150 is all that stands between you and getting your car going you are gonna buy the $150 hose, or you can wait till gm starts producing them again and get one from gmpartsdirect for cheaper, but trust me when gm back orders something i wouldnt wait on it.

Stock from GM, definitely the way to go, but if you find a hose that will allow you to bypass the heater, you can wait a little while longer. I doubt you'll use the heater on your trip back.

Parts stores seem to carry Gates rubber hoses for the heater core to engine, I assume one could remove the crimp, then replace the hose with one of those units. Anyone have any experience with that?
