  • Does this make sense to you?

I was reading up on oil coolers. Seems like a good project after I get my brakes and exhaust figured out. and this is what I came up with: http://www.club3g.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69252
and yeh, I know its an eclipse, but apparently they use pretty much all the same parts, from what I can figure out. Anyway, I thinkin I'd want to mount it behind the radiator instead in front. Wouldn't want it to get hit by a rock and be spilling oil down the highway, the eclipse is a little better sheltered.

Do these instructions make sense? haven't worked on my oil before

If you are serious about doing this kind of job right, check out this guys setup... even went as far as to put a oil thermostat so his oil wouldnt get too cool on the highway or at night.

Awesome writeup on the whole thing, as well as some other write-ups on the same site...

why would you want cooler oil? Cold oil flows slower than warm oil, and if your oil is getting so hot that you'd need something like this, doing this mod is like putting a bandaid over a bullet wound; you're not really solving the problem at hand

            hahaha seriously.
Anyway I read the other write up and its great except for two things: apparently theres pretty much 0 interchangeability (so none of those parts are right) with ls1 and additionally his total cost was over $500 because he picked pretty rediculous parts. My oil's not getting too hot, I just think it'd be a good project that might help in the long run.

What is your reasoning that lead you to believe that having slower-moving oil going to "help in the long run"? Also, you still haven't answered my original question

Re: Does this make sense to you?

The oil system has a pressure compensation mechanism, this is why your pressure soesn't drop as your car heats up, if it didn't, the oil pressure would start at 90 and drop to 20 by the time you got where you were going. Pressure will remain constant.

Cooler oil is more efficient oil. Faster oil doesn't=faster car, it just means your oil pump is doing more work drawing more power away from your engine.

Cooler oil also lasts longer, but thats not of much concern to me as I get it changed as often as I can.

and also no one really wants to see you get in a pissing match with viper rider, so chill out.

yea, too bad my car manages to do that without a oil cooler. Question still stands

Cooler oil is more efficient oil.
How is it more efficient? It harder to move, thus puts more strain on your oil pump, and provides less protection to the internal components of your car.

Too bad I never said having fast oil made your car faster.
it just means your oil pump is doing more work drawing more power away from your engine.
Which is exactly what cool oil does, in comparison to warmer oil

Regular oil changes is not problem to which the answer is spending $500+ on a cute project.

I agree with smoke panther...you dont need an oil cooler. Save that money, or invest somewhere its needed! Maybe we should put an aftermarket tach in the car to see if the stock one is reading correctly! I see your posts all over this forum, constantly going from one thing to another. Its easy to do somemtimes. Good luck with your project! Take your time and I'm sure it'll be fine.
