  • gas guage aint workin

When i fill up i put in as much as i can in the tank. The needle shows that it is past the "F" on the gas gauge.

    Is that bad or something?

What would cause my gas gauge stop working?

    p.s. i drive a 02 beige firebird v6

My 1994 does the same thing but it comes down after about a hundred miles. If it doesn't come down it could be the sensor in your gas tank that went bad.

our guages are never gonna be perfectly right anyway, cuz of the shape of our tanks

It's normal for our cars gas gauges to stay on or past "F" when you fill the tank all the way. The gas tank is shaped like a V.

Yeah the first 100 miles or so the needle won't move. When the gauge shows 1/2, you really have substantially less than 1/2 a tank. I found the best thing to do is just familiarize yourself with the mileage you get per tank. Don't go on a long trip with half a tank on the gauge and expect to make it w/o a refill!

Damn... I thought he had one of those fabled 300 mpg one-off engines that the evil oil companies are trying to repress.

Mine stays 1/8" past the "F" mark for a little while too. After 3/4 of a tank it's on the 1/2 mark then rockets to E.

lol yup, it's all about the shape of our tanks like some of you have said. I used to wonder way back when I first started driving why it seemed that your gas went down faster the less you had. I always figured it was in my head.

it doesnt really have much to do with the tank as much as it does with the float design itself

i found out when my gauge is below E i have about 1.5 gallons left in the tank

It's the same concept as far as I can tell. Unless the computer is suppose to average out readings and blah blah blah but I don't think it is.

it doesnt, it just goes off of the float

i cant remember correctly how they work, but i do know that this is a very common problem in ALL gm cars

hell, even a friends bmw does it also

Yeah like I said, "I don't think it is."

I don't particularly see it as a problem. If you know your car, then you know your car. If it were inconsistent I'd be worried.
