99 Camaro V6

Hi all, im new to this forum as well as camaros in technical matters...heres basicaly my story and i do need help trying to figure out what all i need to do...so heres the lowdown, 4 years ago, a guy parked his camaro to be reposessed, 4 years later its still sitting there and never been touched, it had been flodded once that i know off to about halfway on the doors, one day, i got rerally curious to find keys and see if it still runs, i found the keys and took a battery out to see if she will crank because if it did i would want to get the car...after a minute or two of trying to crank it started right up, i then turned her off to take her into the shop to replace the oil since the oil had water in it, i also drained all the gas, ran the enging eout of gas, put new gas in and put gas/fuelk injector treatment in the gas tank, the inside is in really good condition even though it was flooded, i did my research and it has the performance3 package, the visual package and everything and RS would have except the RS badging...everything electrically works, radio lights dash windows, etc....i called the lender to see about a title, they told me that they had no interest in the camaro and that they are gonna send the release of lender to me so i can go to the dmv and get the title, so basially free car....alright so everything visually and electrically works is in good condition the only thing im worried about is the enginge, since it has been sitting for four years and been floded, other than the basic changing all the fluids a few times to clear everything out, what else should i do to get her running like new? things we need to replac are the tires, battery, accesorry serpentine belt, all fluids, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, machine the brakes, new brake pads, new brake line, and new exhaust because the current one is rusted out...which brings me to aqnother subject, theres not really any rust on the car except for the exhaust and the crankshaft, everything else is rust free, basically is there anything im missing or need to check into mechanically??? what do you guys think about it, it has 65k miles on it, ive been offered $1,000 for the vehicle but i kinda wanna keep it, it seems better than my honda civic....

I would also check to make sure the engine and tranny mounts aren't rusted.

if it was flooded half way up the door, that car is filled with electrical gremlins that, even an experienced mechanic, would have a hard time solving. That 1000 is much more than you'll ever get from anyone else, so I'd say take it and don't look bakc

I've been driving a car that's been flooded a little above the fog lights for a good 4-5 years now. No problems what so ever. BTW, do you mean driveshaft and not crankshaft rusted? It's not good to run an engine out of gas. Lean a/f ratios are not good. And there's also that idea people have been arguing on about the fuel pump staying cool from being submerged in fuel. Look into seafoaming the engine and crankcase. I don't trust the other injector cleaners.. Also I'd say run 93 fuel in it for awhile if that's not something you'd normally do.

BTW smoke panther is a pessimist. If **** was gonna corrode and go bad I'd say it probably had some time to do it in those 4 years. But now it's running with no bugs so where's the gremlins? 3.8l engines are very reliable if taken care of properly and you sound like you have some abilities so it shouldn't be hard. Especially since you're on this forum too. We're all very willing to help you with any problem you might have as long as it hasn't been covered 50 times before :)

I think you should seafoam it, run 93, and keep up with the site.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forums, I appreciate it...answering a few posts, 1. yes i meant driveshaft not crankshaft 2. the only reason why i ran it out of gas was because the guy who left the car there didnt have any gas really left in the car and i forgot to check the gas gage when i took it for a quick drive to see if the tranny and brakes was locked or not and i ran out of gas. 3. i feel i need to make a point about the flooding, even though yes it was flooded half-way it was only flooded for about an hour, it was a one day flash flood and quickly went back down. 4. my Honda Civic is 1995 with 255,500 Miles (of course great mileage to label it "Broken In") Quick Question, since the driveshaft is rusty, should i go ahead and replace and if yes, any suggestions as far as reliable brands?

i have had two cars that were in a 17" flood

water was up and over the oil pans on both cars

they both run perfectly fine today, i had to change the oil a few times though until the water was out

other than that, everything is perfect

Since it's a free car basically (plus the cost of repairs) and since it seems to run OK, why not keep it and see how it goes? The worse case scenario is it has some bugs that you either fix, or if it gets to be too bad then you dump the car.

as for the driveshaft, they do tend to rust, it just depends on how badly rusted it is. If you want to be safe you can go ahead and replace it, but here's where modding starts! :D

You can usually pick up what we call a "1LE Aluminum Driveshaft" for around $80 - 100 bucks off of another v8 f-body, and it's a BIG improvement over the stock 2-piece or 1-piece driveshaft. takes about 10-15 lbs off the rotating weight of your drivetrain depending on which driveshaft is on it now, and at the price they are availible, there's no reason to not have one if you are already going to replace it.

To get her going I'd replace that, I'd change all the fluids (engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, diff. fluid., trans fluid. ), give it a good tune up with new plugs and wires...brake lines and brakes to be safe, battery, all your filters, the serpentine belt because its probably bad....tires if you think they need it and you should be set, barring anything else it will need that we don't know about...also take a picture of your RPO codes....aka door jam sticker. Let us take a look and we can tell you what it's equipped with as far as gears and stuff like that....

for the rusted exhaust I suggest you pick up a catback for our cars....I have a flowmaster and love it....

You have a running Camaro with T-tops and decent interior for free?! Of course you should keep it. Even if you don't want to replace your daily driver with it, keep it and tune it up. After a solid 6 months of use without issues, surely you could get much more than $1k for it. I say tune it up and flip it for the cash. If you fall in love with it, keep it for yourself. But don't take the $1k now.

Ask any professional in the automotive industry, if they would buy a car with flood damage.
