  • Strange Misfire problem

About three weeks ago my heater had stopped blowing cold air. The car would also buck after a cold startup when i accelerated lightly and idled a little rough, but it would go away. I decided to inspect the plug wires and spark plugs. I found that the center electrode was broken off of the spark plug in cyl. 5. I replaced the plugs, wires, and installed MSD coils. Also, replaced the heater core which fixed the heater. Now the car misses violently after startup (sounds like a WRX, but not as fast) and smooths out after driving about 1 mile. Checked that the wires were on correctly and they were. Pressurized the cooling system to check for head gasket leak. Found nothing. My mechanic found a broken spark plug on cyl. 4 and replaced it, but that only fixed it for one day and the miss returned. Mechanic replaced another spark plug and that didn't work either. The computer isn't throwing any codes and i'm confused. Help

dude , this kind of **** makes me ****ing hate f-bodys and there unreliableness. My car just started missfireing as well. I recently replaced my plugs and wires but not my coils. I also have been having a coolanty leaking issue and my heater not being able to blow hot air. On top of this i have been finding rediculous puddles of water on my carpet of my floor(driver side and passenger side) and still cannot figure out why. O yea, and my auto shop teacher said i prob have a blown head gasket... Great!

Prob will never own another f body again.

Exactly right. ANY car will give you a world of trouble if not properly maintained.

You are looking for something reliable and bought something domestic? Please don't complain about that, it's you're own fault. If you want something reliable and faster than a v6 fbody, get a newer (97+) civic.

yeah quite possible if dissapering coolant... if you see any colant in the oil it is quite possibly a head gasket (also look around the intake - thermostat area)

A head gasket is an easy fix (just get a Chiltons and take your time) and the gasket will cost $20 for just the head gakset or just under a $100 if you reaplace everything.

But, if your head gasket goes while you are driving then most likely you will overheat and kill a perfectly good enginge.

don't give up on GM the 3.8 is one of the best V6's out there (240HP and will last 200K w nuture) and the 5.7 is constantly know as the best enginge in the world... but if you want to drive a squirrel box that never brakes a 0.1 straigh four honda civic might work for you just please polietley move from the left lane... but I'd say pull out the V6 drop in a 5.7 and then move left from the left lane over into the HOV

which 3.8 do you have that has 240hp?
I'm expecting my 3.8 to last at least 300k miles

I just bought a 2000 gran prix as a second "commuter car" and it was listing 240HP online (listing for a supercahrged).. don't know how acurate that really is though... as the specs from my Chiltons for a 96-02 fbird 3.8 varys from about 200-210HP.. changing from year to year depaendng on exact comp stroke, bore etc.,

and back to the original question, before the flame fest began...

first off man, ive owned 3.4's for 6 yrs now.. my check engine light has NEVER come on, even with severe problems. you cant rely on it for our cars.

ok, with that said.. what kind of plugs and wires are you using? what are you setting the gap on them at? you might want to try a compression test to see if there is anything funny going on with the cylinder that is breaking plugs.

also, you might be experiencing a lot of knock. in fact, if its enough to break the insulators, you're going to have much bigger problems shortly if you keep driving it. this could explain the lack of power (computer going into some sort of safe mode perhaps, or just all the knock sapping power)

is it always one cylinder that is breaking the plugs? do you have any mods done? i think these are good places to start to try and figure out your problem..

                              good luck!!!
