  • starting trouble.....

A while back I was having misfire on Cylinder three so I had the pulgs and wires changed it was better but still was misfiring so I replaced the cyilnder three and six coil pack and it worked stopped misfiring. and everytime I went to start it before all that work was down it would start really fast I would have to hold the key for a second but everyonce in a while now a hold it for a second but it won't start right off I have to hold the key a little longer and it will start everytime and then sometimes I hold it for a second and it starts fast it's off and on it dosen't do it everytime I go to start it just sometimes

anyone have an idea on what is going on car runs great no cheak engine light or anything like that thanks.

    Re: starting trouble.....

i'm not sure what was going on before but i'm pretty sure it's normal for our cars. I have a theory and keep in mind unless someone who knows what their really talking about can affirm what i'm about to say don't bother heeding my advice.

the engine's in our cars are set up to fire at cylinder 1 so sometimes when you shut your car off it's cycle may end at cylinder 6 firing which will mean when you go to start it up again it will do it right away since cylinder 1 fires right after 6. However if you end up at cylinder 2 it will take a second to get back to cylinder 1 firing position. does that make some sense to u? now if there are times when it really takes a full second or so maybe there is something wrong with your cam sensor in that it is not able to tell your pcm at what firing order you are at.

i really hope what i said makes sense and is legit. all i can say for sure is that i don't think it's anything to worry about, start up times differ.

the starter spins the engine at a very high RPM, one so high that your theory wouldnt be noticed

now, i have no idea what the thread starter is talking about because i cant understand him, but i do know that sometimes when i hit the key my car will start up and stall, and i have to hit the key again.. this happens every once in a while, and is completely normal, but usually it starts right up

          Re: starting trouble.....

I had a guess of fuel pressure. Or voltage drops in the batt due to whatever and as your starter spins the crank it works the alternator back up n blah blah. Just ideas. Either way, my car has only not started like 2 times after cranking it for 5 seconds. That's 2 times out of eh what like 4,000+ times?

To the OP, like TKO said it differs with all of us and it's really nothing to worry about.

Yeah sorry about that. I'm not that great at expaining things but you hit it on the head I hit the key car starts up and stalls and I have to hit the key again but I have to hold the key longer the second time it never did that until I had the plugs and wires and 6&3 coil pack changed so I was just wonder if something was going on.

              i wouldnt worry about it

my dads car, with that auto start thing (you just turn the key and let it go an it will crank until the car starts) stalls every once in a while

it my even be you also, you let go of the key a bit too soon when you think it is going to start up and it doesnt, the stalling causes a *little* flood of gas in the cylinders and it takes a bit longer to start up

as long as this isnt occurring 100% of the time, i wouldnt worry about it too much

                Re: starting trouble.....

my firebird has been doing the same.
about to put a new starter in it and see what that does.

as far as i rememeber..it didnt do that until i changed the fuel filter. so i might buy a more expensive fuel filter n change it.

the starter has nothing to do with that problem lol all it does is spin the engine

But the 3.8L firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2, not 1-2-3-4-5-6 as the 3.4 was....doesn't the OP have a 98?

                      To the OP:

I think it's more of a fuel/spark problem than the starter- the starter's doing exactly what it was designed to do, spin the motor...

can you hear the fuel pump prime everytime it does this?
