It maintains a vacuum in the crankcase to help seal the rings and reduce blow-by. Then the oil vapor and other blow by gasses are routed back into the engine to be consumed.

why would this need to be replaced? What happens if you don't? I don't ever plan on changing mine unless I start having engine problems.

It's only a $7 part and takes about 2 minutes to change. Mine got stuck closed last year and after a night of hard driving oil was leaking out throught my throttle body, it made quite a mess. So I'd recommend changing it at about 50,000 miles.

Good example RS. (to bad it happened)

99, it's the easiest thing to replace (next to your old lady) under the hood. Besides, it's part of properly maintaining your ride.

Well you go to an autozone or advance auto parts or pepboys...whichever..tell them your car year and engine size and let them get the pcv valve for you..Its quite simple i changed mine about one week ago and it took about 2 min..It was recommended to me because i lost gas mileage and the pcv valve needs be changed about 35-40000 miles

you want to replace it to keep the crankcase from building up positive pressure (from the blow-by gases). if its not working you can get leaks from the valve covers and intake manifold as the pressure finds another way out.
