• Thermo effecting gas mileage and fan switch?

Hey everyone....how bad is the mileage difference between the 180 and 160 thermo?

Also.....I want to put a manual fan switch on the car...has anyone did it themselves and have some sort of directions for install? I have a 1999 camaro?

Thanks

Follow the instructions from this thread for the fan switch, not hard at all http://www.camarov6.com/cgi-bin/ulti...c&f=1&t=010072

Not sure about the thermo gas mileage...

the thermostat and gas mileage concern is also weather related.
I put my original 195* thermo back in for winter.
the temps in winter just don't get high enough (at least not in ohio) for operating temps to allow hot enough burn.

proof: I got 19mpg with the 180* in, and about 22mpg with the 195*.

now, for the other seasons, I use the 180*, and see about 25 mpg

Generally the thermostat doesn't affect fuel economy unless the outside temp is an extreme high or extreme low. Here in FL, I get better fuel economy with my 160. If I lived in canada, that might not be the case.

ok then dominic, i do live in canada, vancouver, bc, to be exact, would a 180 thermostat hurt my fuel economy (temps here are like seattle's), or what advice do you have, 'coz its hot in the summer here, but it can get near freezing in the winter in the early morning... i do want more power, but i wont give up fuel economy for this mod

thanks

Well you could TRY a 160, but as cold as it gets, and knowing how cold that can be, I think a 180 would be as low as I'd go. In colder weather its very easy to run the engine too cold, and that can indeed cause fuel vaporization problems in the cyl and such.

Run a 180 It should be plenty.
