I find it hard to believe no one asked this, but my search came up inconclusive...how do you replace, or get to the evaporator coil...is it a hard job, and do you have to take our dash apart to do it?...any write ups?

If its not hard to get to I might get mine fixed, otherwise I think I am just going to delete the A/c cause it doesnt work...

no t-tops, but I am not paying 1500 to have it fixed...I barely ever used the thing anyways, literally only when it was raining...but if I can fix it by getting to the evap coil easy I will keep it...

uhmm, I took all the AC components from the engine bay out of my 98.. so if you look up how to get to it and such I might sell it to ya for a very nice price :)

I replaced my evaporator core myself last year. It wasnt hard at all, just a little time consuming. I used the instructions in a Haynes manual. Actually the worst part of the job is having to take out the heater core first.

Just kidding, buy hers. She's been trying to get rid of it for awhile and to be completely honest I really don't feel like getting into my dash just now.

While I believe you that it's possible to do it with the dash still in (you obviously took yours out that way) it seems to me that it would just be easier to take the dash panel out. In fact.. how DID you get it out with the dashboard still in?? Surely you didn't pull it out through the heater core access panel... I wouldn't think it would fit.

The only way I've ever removed the evaporator core in a 4th gen fbody is by removing the HVAC box and disassembling it.

                      Re: evaporator coil

take out the glove box and panel under it. there is a coil box right there. un bolt the front face. that slides down(tight fit) then it's right there. you have to slide it down under the dash threw the access panel. and put it back the same way

and by no way is it easier to take the dash out. your talking alot freaking time to do that. i know! i've done both.

                          Re: evaporator coil

under panel is held up with 2 push holders so just pull downwards, the glove box is held up with 3 bolts on the bottle. i think they are 5.5 or 7 mm. then just open the glove box and push the sides in and pull.

the evaporator coil looks just like a heater coil

95-97 then there is the 98-02

lol...dont know what a heater coil looks like either....

thanks for the help so far, gunna wait for it to warm up a bit and go pull it out...now its safe to just pull this out and not put another back in if say I decide its not worth it right? I will still have heat and defrost?

if you decided that you didn't want to put another in, you would somehow have to close off the lines that go to the condenser unless you were doing a full a/c delete and take the condenser and compressor out also.
