Well, my car is gettin' old and not gettin' any younger. Its got 160K but it runs great and has not given me any problems. I'm one of those "plan-ahead" dudes and I know i'm probably gonna have to get a new engine, or maybe a new car, later in the future. I was surfin' thru the web and ran into Trans Am Creations where they sell used engines. They have quite a variety of engines from a 3.4 to the LS1. I was lookin' at the 3.8 (46K) for $450. I saw the picture of the engine and its lookin' pretty rough. Would it be worth buyin' an engine like that for a low price and then rebuild it or am i better off just buyin' a brand new engine? Is the rust in the engine removeable? Thanks.

Doesn't look that bad really... Personally while the engine is out I would save up some cash and swap those Exhaust Manifolds out for some Tubular Headers before I dropped the engine in. Maybe a few other things too but it doesn't look bad at all IMO. I'm sure the block can be cleaned and a rebiuld wouldn't do it any harm.1997 Camaro RS W/T-Tops
All Stock / 200 HP

Yea, thats what i'm tryin' to do. Rebuild it with better, high performance parts and then when its time to put the engine in, i have an engine that runs good and has good HP. In your opinion, how much money am i lookin' to spend on rebuilding this engine?http://www.cardomain.com/id/1995birdman

Tyler:
My uncle and his friend own a mechanic shop and they said i could use his garage and his tools during off-time and my uncle offered to help out in whatever I needed so I won't spending money in labor.

I've always been the kind of person to try something new. I'll look into a LS1 or a LT1. TransamCreations has a chart that mentions what all you have to change to go from a v6 to a v8 so i'll into that as well. Also, I'll look into the 5.3l vortec swap that u mentioned. Are there any good sites to read about this swap?http://www.cardomain.com/id/1995birdman

just one note of advice here. unless the place your gonna buy from is a trusted place, and they check out the engine, make sure you hear it run first. i mean, a 45k engine cant be TOO beat up right? well what if the guy NEVER changed his oil? i mean, if you CANT hear it run, just make sure you can at least turn it back in for a new one. my best friend got a good lookin 65k motor from a junkyard and that thing started pouring smoke and sounded like crap. he finally got the guy to give him a new one but he was out all the time it took him to put it in and take it back out. just saying, be careful. and hey, if you can go v-8, y not ya know?2000 3.8L Camaro A4 Pewter Y87
K&N Filter, SLP Ram Air kit, Eibach Pro Kit, Flowmaster 80 series, Silverstars, NGK plugs and MSD Super Conductor Wires, Electric Water Pump
